Item Description: John Fulton Short, Barcelona, 1964. Hardcover. Book Condition: vg. John Fulton Short (illustrator). First edition; Limited edition. Elephant folio. 42pp. Gilt decorated black cloth in white paper covered slipcase with black lettering. Corners slightly rubbed. Minor scuffing. Some staining and discoloration to slipcase. Two-inch tear to upper left corner along edge of slipcase. Frontispiece. A beautiful reflection on Lorca's famous poetry about his friend Ignacio Sanchez Mejias, the matador that was killed in a bullfight. "Ignacio Sanchez Mejias death, which was tragic as his life was inspiring, swept Spain with a sorrow comparable to that following the death of a great public figure. It was responsible for a poem which is not only the finest dirge ever written for the death of a bullfighter, but also one of the greatest lyric poems in the Spanish language. In turn, this poem has inspired four of the strongest, most original paintings since those of Goya" which are present in this volume. This is one of a limited edition of 900. The four color paintings by Short are laid-in in a pocket at rear. Illustrated with full-page and in-text b/w plates and one double-page photograph. Most of the plates show the famous matador in the arena. Includes the poem. With commentary by Jose Maria De Cosso, Robert Vavra and Roy Campbell. In very good condition.
