Val Biro (illustrator). #### The Folio Society Book: The Land Leaguers 1998 by Anthony Trollope and Introduced by Fran Delaney #### ## THIS BOOK: Categorised AS NEW: This is the second printing of the1995, first published serially in Life: A Weekly Journal of Society, Literature, the Fine Arts and Finance from November 1882 to 4th October 1889. This edition is based on the text as it appeared in the Chatto & Windus version, with minor errors corrected. Like many other Folio Society books in our inventory, this novel is from a private collector. As a collector, he didn't always read FS books; he read soft-covered books to keep his collection pristine. So they are in as-new condition, and in some cases, they were never taken out of the slipcase. I think that explains the condition. If there are any issues, we will list them. This book is set in Monotype Bell on fine cartridge paper## ## OUR IMAGES: We always include two or more images, a front and back cover and one of the slipcase. This is so that you know what you are purchasing and that the image is of the book we have in stock, not a stock image. READ ON: There is information on the book content and any interesting facts about the book, the author and the publisher. ## ## "The Land Leaguers," one of Anthony Trollope's final novels, explores Ireland's social and political turmoil during the late 19th century. The story delves into the complexities of the Land War, a period marked by tenant farmers' struggles for fair rents and land ownership rights, and the conflicts between the Irish peasantry and the British landlords. ## The novel follows several interwoven characters, including the idealistic young land agent Florian Jones, who finds himself between his loyalty to the landowners and his sympathy for the tenants' plight. As tensions rise, Florian's relationships with those around him, including his love interest, Clara Heathcote, and his mentor, Sir Robert Ussher, become increasingly strained. Through the personal dramas of these characters, Trollope paints a vivid picture of the broader societal issues and the impact of political movements on individual lives. ## ## In her introduction to The Folio Society edition, Fran Delaney provides insightful context on Trollope's depiction of the Irish Land War and its relevance to contemporary readers. She highlights Trollope's nuanced portrayal of the conflicts and his empathetic exploration of the human condition amidst social upheaval.## ## The Folio Society is a distinguished independent publisher based in London, founded by Charles Ede in 1947. Renowned for its exquisite illustrated hardback editions, the Folio Society produces a wide range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children's books. Each edition features specially designed bindings and artist-commissioned illustrations, making them highly collectable and visually striking.## ## Initially operating as a membership-based book club, the Folio Society transitioned to a model where anyone can purchase their books online. The company publishes around 50 titles annually, including limited editions, often featuring additional elements like prints or signatures from authors and illustrators.## ## The Folio Society has garnered numerous awards for its exceptional book design and production, including the V&A Book Illustration Awards and the British Book Production and Design Awards. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship has made them popular among bibliophiles and art lovers.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
