About this Item: Harper & Brothers, 1882. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1882.Du Chaillu was a well known French/American traveller, anthropologist and writer. Early in his career he focused on Africa, in fact he was the first European to confirm the existence of gorillas. Later he turned his eyes northward and wrote this 2 volume set as well as a similar sized work published in 1889 The Viking Age , also currently available from this bookseller. This is a two-volume set, volume 1 - 441 pages with a large folded map of Scandinavia in a pocket inside the back cover. Volume two has 474 pages. Pages measure 8.7" X 5.9". There is a total of 235 illustrations in the two books. The map measures 23.2" X 18.7" and there are two miniscule tears at two of the folds measuring less than .2". This near fine set is bound in blue cloth with a gilt sun and rays reaching over the entire front covers. In addition, there are red birds, four on the front covers and two on the back covers. The front cover of volume one is very lightly scuffed and there is a small area of discoloration on the back cover some 1.6" in length. The spines are bright with gilt text and a coat of arms in red. This is a beautiful, very attractive set of a very important, scholarly work on Scandinavia. This is a very heavy set of books and additional postage will be required. About this Item: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1882, 1882. 2 volumes, octavo (222 x 145 mm). Original blue cloth, gilt titles and dark red coat of arms to spines, sun and bird blocks to front boards in gilt and dark red respectively, further bird tools to rear boards, pale brown endpapers. Later ownership inscriptions of A. D. Exton and Franklin Curtiss to the initial blank. Spines slightly faded, extremities a touch rubbed and bumped, rear covers lightly marked, staining from removed bookplates to front pastedowns, contents toned, pale tide-mark to lower outer corners in volume 2 from page 100. A very good copy. Engraved frontispiece to each volume (double-page in volume 1), 51 similar plates, profuse illustrations to the text, coloured folding map in end-pocket to volume 1. First US edition of the book noted for coining the titular phrase. Following a series of celebrated expeditions to Gabon, in which he provided the first external account of gorillas and of the so-called "pygmy" peoples, French-American explorer Du Chaillu (1835-1903) travelled extensively across Scandinavia between 1871 and 1878. His account pays special attention to the antiquities of the prehistoric and Viking ages; it was followed in 1889 by a specialised study, The Viking Age. The Land of the Midnight Sun was originally published in the United Kingdom the previous year; there were several further editions and a German translation. Some commentators have believed Du Chaillu to have been Edgar Rice Burroughs's inspiration for Tarzan. Howgego IV D32. Seller Inventory # 114848
