About this Item: Victor Gollancz Ltd. hardcover. Condition: Fair. USED, ACCEPTABLE, NOT EX-LIBRARY, tanned edges, foxing, edgewear, no dust jacket, spine is split, 334 pages. The author, searching for his father, enters a bizarre underworld populated, among others, by humans who entered and settled this underground world centuries before. This society is repugnant to him - most of its inhabitants live and work in unquestioning obedience to the state. Most of the book is taken up by vivid description of how he makes his way and survives in this strange and inhospitable world. The descriptions of the world succesfully convey a feeling of dread and despair, the "landscapes" are well drawn and the writing, though at times wordy, is always involving. This was probably written with a political message in mind, given the rise of totalitarian regimes in the world at the time of writing in the 1930s. Is it SF? - just about - but i would put it with such books as Erewhon, Flatland, and Gullivers Travels. Seller Inventory # 14228
