"Of all the days on all the fields where American soldiers have fought, the most terrible was September 17, 1862. The Civil War battle wa ged on that date at Antietam Creek, Maryland, took a human toll never exceeded on any day in our nation's history. The battle at Antietam was pivotal to the course of the war, yet the complete story of this climactic and bitter struggle has n e v e r b een told. In (this book, the author) draws on a wealth of newly discovered diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam - and drama it is, pitting high-stakes military gambler Robert E. Lee against George B. M cC le ll an , t he general with every soldierly quality but one, the will to fight. Sears's subject is not just generals and their tactics, however, it is also the emotions and experiences of the men in the ranks, and their stories emerge here wit h p owe rfu l a ut hen ticity." Item Description: Ticknor & Fields (1983), 1983. Hardcover w/ Jacket. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. This 6.25 x 9.25 inch, 431 page hardcover book with dust wrapper is the apparent first edition of this title as indicated by the 1983 date on the title page and the 1983 copyright date on the following page along with the complete number line. The book itself is in near fine condition with just a touch of corner wear and a small bump to a lower corner. The book features light blue paper-over-boards with a dark navy blue back strip - - with gilt lettering on the spine - - with the lettering “As New.“ The interior text pages are all but fine with just the slightest hint of corner bumping to the top first twenty pages. Beyond that the text shows no writing, damage or wear. The jacket is in very good condition but does have one distinct condition deficiency - - the top edge of the jacket from the outside folds and all the way across that top edge has apparently been chipped extensively by perhaps insect nibbling - - leaving a jagged but clean cut margin along the top of the wrapper. Beyond that the wrapper shows just a bit of edge wear with no clipped corners but no price shown. A very nice copy of this acclaimed account of the battle of Antietam, in Maryland in 1862 - - which is still recognized as one of the handful of the most important and influential of the American Civil War. The book contains numerous maps and one ten-page block of black-and-white reproduction photos. 431 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 1505-1085
