A first rate antidote for "fuzzy thought and muddled writing ." 8 chapters:I, The Elimination of Metaphysics; II, The Function of Philosophy; III, The Nature of Philosophical Analysis; IV,The A Priori; V, Truth & Probability; VI, Critique of Ethics & Philosophy; VII, The Self & the Common World; and VIII, Solutions of Outstanding Philosophical Disputes. About this Item: London, Victor Gollanoz, 1936. 8vo. Orig. blue full cloth w. gilt lettering on spine. Spine a bit soiled, otherwise nice and clean, also internally. Rare first edition of Ayer's most important and well known work, in which he presents his Verification Principle, which defines a sentence as being meaningful if, and only if, is has a verifiable empirical import. He began writing the book at the young age of 24, and two years later it was published. Ayer is considered a clear and stringent writer. "Ayer's philosophical ideas were deeply influenced by those of the Vienna Circle and David Hume. His clear, stringent and polemical exposition of them makes "Language, Truth and Logic" essential reading on the tenets of Logical Positivism -- the book is regarded as a classic of 20th century analytic philosophy, and is widely read in philosophy courses around the world." (Wikipedia). The great logical positivist, Sir Alfred Jules Ayer (1910-89), was Grote Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Logic at the University College London from 1946 till 1959, and afterwards he became Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford. About this Item: Victor Gollancz Ltd., London, 1936. FIRST EDITION. Half title + TP + [5] = Dedication page + [7]-10 = Contents + [11]-14 = Preface + [15]-254 + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First Edition. There were only 500 copies printed of this book making it a difficult one to find a first edition in collectible condition. This, Ayer's first book, was most responsible for bringing the logical positivist theories of the Vienna Circle to the English-speaking world. Here, the young author carefully and lucidly defines, explains, and argues for the verification principle of logical positivism, sometimes referred to as the criterion of significance or criterion of meaning. Most especially, Ayer explains how this Principle of Verification must be applied to the problems commonly addressed by philosophy.Published when Ayer was just 26, this, his most famous book, presents "his clear and definitive exposition of the purpose and method of a philosophical enquiry. Relying on the principle that a statement of fact, to be genuine, must be empirically verifiable, he demonstrates the impossibility of any system of speculative philosophy which attempts to transcend the field of natural science, and shows that if philosophy is to make good its claim to be a genuine branch of knowledge, it must confine itself to works of clarification and analysis." Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine which is lightly darkened and just a bit worn at the bottom. Other than a bit of marginal foxing on the first few leaves and to the outside edges of the text block, this is a clean and tight copy of this important work of 20th century philosophy. With a very negative, contemporary review by T. S. Gregory loosely folded along with the detached front dust wrapper flap (only). ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Seller Inventory # 953
