About this Item: Harper & Brothers, New York, New York, 1881. Condition: Good. First edition thus. An ex-library copy with markings on the endpapers and title page. Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 1/4" tall, 972 pages, beige cloth over marbled boards. A good, clean sturdy, hard cover overall, with minor shelf wear, rubbed at all extremities, minor soiling to cloth, interior hinges and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed with some minor foxing at the endpapers, BUT with dampstaining to bottom fore-edge visible at the top margin (not affecting text) and with 'basement' smell. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource. can't find Three-quarter cloth over marbled boards. Seller Inventory # 30171

Volume XI of the Wessex Novels. Osgood's 'Wessex Novels' (and its US counterpart published by Harpers) is the first uniform and complete edition of Hardy's works. 'The edition is an important one. The text of every novel was thoroughly and carefully revised, the topography (names and distances) corrected where necessary, chapters frequently retitled, and much rewriting done. In addition Hardy prepared a special preface for each volume' (Purdy p.281). Each of the sixteen volumes has an etched frontispiece by Macbeth-Raeburn depicting a scene from the novel drawn on the spot (in this case 'Stancy Castle') and a map of Wessex drawn by Hardy himself. About this Item: London Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington 1881, 1881. 3 volumes. First English edition. 8vo, bound in antique three-quarter blue morocco over blue marbled boards, the spines are gilt lettered in two compartments and have wide gilt decorated raised bands, t.e.g., the original slate gray cloth to the upper cover and spine of Volume I has been retained and bound in. Now housed in a fine morocco backed foldover case. 312; 275; 269 pp. A handsome and well preserved set, internally fine with just a bit of normal age mellowing to the text, the original half-titles retained, the antique bindings with some evidence of age or use at the joints and extremities. FIRST EDITION OF HARDY'S MOST CONTEMPORARY NOVEL. Unlike his Wessex novels, this is work is set in the more technologically advanced contemporaneous age, so the plot exhibits devices uncommon among Hardy's novels, such as falsified telegrams and faked photographs. It was originally published in monthly installments in the European edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, from December 1880 to December 1881. Due to this arrangement Harper was able to publish the work in book form first, but this English edition was only issued a few weeks later and contains revisions made by Hardy not included in Harper's issue. It is the only three-decker issue published and the print run is presumed to be only around 1000 copies. Seller Inventory # 25542

Each instalment featured an illustration by George du Maurier, who had already illustrated another of Hardy's serials, The Hand of Ethelberta. About this Item: London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881, 1881. 3 volumes, octavo. Original grey sand-grain cloth, spines lettered in gilt between blind-stamped three-line bands at head and foot, central publisher's device within three-line border to sides in blind, cream endpapers. Housed in a dark blue leather-entry slipcase. Spines rolled and sunned, extremities lightly bumped with a few short nicks to spine-ends; library stamps effaced from spines, front covers of vols. I and II, and pastedowns, three adjacent strips of fading to vol. II front cover, a few pale red marks to front cover vol. III , occasional light foxing as usual, briefly heavier towards front of vols. I and II; light browning to half-titles, title-pages, final gatherings and vol. II quire D (different paper-stock). A very good copy. Publisher's 32-page catalogue to rear of vol. II as issued. First UK edition, printed in early December 1881 "in an edition presumably of 1,000 copies" (Purdy), rare in the original cloth; this copy from the library of Walter E. Smith, the pre-eminent modern bibliographer of Victorian fiction, with his pencilled ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of each volume. A Laodicean originally appeared as a serial in the European edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine December 1880 to December 1881, and in the US edition of Harper's from January 1881 and January 1882. It was then published by Harper's under their Franklin Square Library imprint on 25 November 1881 and issued to booksellers unbound: this iteration Purdy considers the true first edition, though the London edition was the first to contain Hardy's final revisions, with the novel originally written "under the gravest handicaps" after Hardy had fallen ill with just three instalments in type and was forced to dictate the rest to his wife from his sick-bed. The triple-decker format was largely adopted for sale to lending libraries, with sets retaining the original cloth in anything approaching collectable condition markedly uncommon. Purdy, pp. 36-37, Sadleir 1109, Wolff 2980. Seller Inventory # 106269
