Item Description: Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1937. Hard Cover. Book Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 21st. One of Ion Idriess' earliest books. and the one that made his a household name, was first published in 1931. An eloquent measure of its tremenndous success was that this 1937 edition was the 21st, Remember, this demand came during the Great Depression when every shilling counted. His account is of the legendry Lasseter expedition, searchng for a fabulous gold reef in the remote desert country of Central Australia inhanbited mainly by a few nomadic Aboriginal tribes, The expedition was well equipped for its time, with motor vehicles, wireless and an aircraft. It was well supported financially and a prospecting party of six men, experienced in the ways of the Aussie Outback was selected. The author's record of the expedition, up to its tragic end with Lasseter's lonenly death, was compiled from information from its survivors, records from the sponsoring company, fragments from letters/diary notes, made by Lasseter, and found by a search party, plus Idriess' own experiences of Australia's hard desert environment and its native people. Probably this prolific author's most popular book, 21st edition of 1937, 251 pages including index followed by ll pages promoting other Idriess titles, 54 b/w illustrations, mainly photos with some document reproductions. Orange hard covers with black front titles, border, decoration and spine titles are VG, e/paper maps, text block excellent and tight in boards, no inscriptions. Bookseller Inventory # 004410
