First printing of the first paperback edition in the Pelican imprint. Previously published in the UK by Jonathan Cape in 1930. The book has quite heavy page browning and the previous owner's name in ink on the first page (A.L. Symonds who was the Labour MP for Cambridge from 1945-50) but is otherwise firm, clean and unmarked. The jacket is complete but the rear flap is completely detached and there is a one inch tear at the base of the spine and chipping at the corners. Original navy blue cloth a little rubbed and gilt titles to the spine slightly dull. Signature of A.E. Slater in pencil on the front free endpaper with some penciled page references to the rear endpaper. Slater was a member of the Council of the British Interplanetary Society which organization hosted the presentation of Stapledon's paper 'Interplanetary Man' on 9th October 1948 at St Martin's School, Charing Cross Road, London. The flyer for this event is neatly tipped on to the front free endpaper. The full text of 'Interplanetary Man' was published in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society Vol 7, No 6 in November 1948 and is offered, togther with Nos 1 to 5 in the series, in the contemporary Cordex self binding case from which the individual issues with original wrappers intact can be removed if so desired. The lecture programme for the 1947-8 session is tipped on to the front pastedown and the index for all six issues is present at the rear. Contributions by A.C. Clarke, A.V. Cleaver et al.
