Item Description: Grove Press, New York, 2000. Book Condition: Fine. Later printing. Trade paperback. Fine. Affectionately Inscribed to fellow author Nicholas Delbanco by the author. Selby's first novel which, because of its frank portrayal of homosexuality, drug use, prostitution, and pretty much everything else society didn't want to acknowledge, was the subject of great controversy and an important obscenity trial in the United Kingdom. Basis for the 1989 film with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Burt Young, and Jerry Orbach. Bookseller Inventory # 420371

Item Description: New York Grove Press 1964, 1964. First Edition. 8vo, 304pp. Text block clean and tight with only light toning towards the edges. Quarter bound black buckram over red boards with red-stamped titles to boards (boards faded and marked but solid). In a very good illustrated dust jacket with portrait to rear (dust jacket is basically very good with expected shelfwear, chipping to the top of the spine and rear edge, an old watermark to rear and an old tape repair to the centre of the front top edge - all sounding worse than the overall look). Very Good INSCRIBED by the author on the verso of the half-title page to a fellow AA member: "Dear Leonard, I am glad that you have found you exit from our mutual problem. Love Cuddy, 11-26-74". A rare inscribed copy of the first edition of this novel. A book which set new standards for American literature - arguably paving the way for the likes of Bukowski - it still reads as strongly and eye-openingly a half-century on.
