Amelia Mary Earhart (1897 - declared dead 1939) was an American aviation pioneer. On July 2nd, 1937, Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. During her life, she embraced celebrity culture and women's rights, and since her disappearance has become a cultural icon. She was one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. After Earhart's transatlantic passenger flight, publisher and public relations wizard George Palmer Putnam (1887-1950) became her manager. In 1931, she married him (very hesitantly as she only accepted after he asked 6 different times) on the condition they would separate in a year if unhappy. Earhart referred to her marriage as a "partnership" with "dual control." RAREA1937AFGB 04/24 - HK1392.
