Bound in publisher's red cloth with blind panelling to boards, gilt scene of Stanley and porters crossing a watercourse to front boards, gilt titles and decorative gilt bird to spine; all edges uncut, brown endpapers. Map preserved in pocket at rear of volume one. With bookseller's ticket. Bindings are rubbed, worn and frayed at corners and spine ends, spines faded, volume one front joint starting, volume two top of both joints starting. Internally clean, with minor spotting to prelims of volume one, and minor stain to prelims of volume two. Bookseller's ticket "Pickering, Bookseller, York" to front pastedown volume two. Livingstone's last diary covers the last eight years of his life, including the famous incident with Henry Morton Stanley. The addition of the narratives of Chuma and Susi, who carried Livingstone's body over a thousand miles to the coast so that it could be returned to Britian for burial, sparked a significant revival in Livingstone's reputation, which had suffered due to the perceived failure of several of his expeditions. These diaries rightly characterise Livingstone as deeply determined, and his entire focus was on bringing the institution of slavery to an end in Africa. His ideas of founding European Christian colonies in Africa are intrinsically linked to his anti-slavery project, and it has been argued that his position set in motion both the colonial exploitation of Africa and the eventual downfall of the imperial period. Livingstone became a symbol of what the British—and other Europeans—wished to believe about their motives as they took over tropical Africa in the late nineteenth century: in effect he redeemed the colonial project" (ODNB). Waller was a member of the first Universities' Mission to Central Africa in 1860, and met Livingstone while working as a lay missionary in Nyasaland. An attractive copy. Seller Inventory # 119269
