About this Item: Henry Holt and Co., 2010. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Drawing on the voices of atomic-bomb survivors and the new science of forensic archaeology, Charles Pellegrino describes the events and aftermath of two days in August when nuclear devices detonated over Japan changed life on Earth forever Last Train from Hiroshima offers readers a stunning %u201Cyou are there%u201D time capsule, gracefully wrapped in elegant prose. Charles Pellegrino%u2019s scientific authority and close relationship with the A-bomb%u2019s survivors make his account the most gripping and authoritative ever written. At the narrative%u2019s core are eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand%u2014the Japanese civilians on the ground and the American flyers in the air. Thirty people are known to have fled Hiroshima for Nagasaki%u2014where they arrived just in time to survive the second bomb. One of them, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the only person who experienced the full effects of the cataclysm at ground zero both times. The second time, the blast effects were diverted around the stairwell in which Yamaguchi had been standing, placing him and a few others in a shock coccoon that offered protection, while the entire building disappeared around them. Pellegrino weaves spellbinding stories together within an illustrated narrative that challenges the %u201Cofficial report,%u201D showing exactly what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki%u2014and why. Former library book. Mylar protector included. Binding is moderately loose. Moderate shelf wear. Ex-Library. Seller Inventory # 123507657

About this Item: Henry Holt, New York, 2010. Hard Cover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. First Edition. First edition, this controversial book was recalled by the publisher because of alleged inaccuracies in the author's research. True first edition, first printing as indicated by the number string on the copyright page. A revised edition is in the planning but not yet issued. Pellegrino's source for material parts of the book was a flyer who was never really on the bombing mission. The source, Joseph Fuoco, told Pellegrino that he'd been a last-minute replacement on an observation plane tracking the bomb for engineer James Corliss, who had fallen ill. But Fuoco, who died at 84 in 2008, never did anything of the sort. Corliss had neither fallen ill nor ceded his spot on the flight. Worse, engineers at Los Alamos, N.M., dispute the claim that any nuclear accident had taken place before its detonation. Never opened, never read. Only about 7000 copies of this book have been sold before retailers returned the original copies to the publisher. Seller Inventory # 014329

About this Item: Henry Holt and Company, New York, 2010. Condition: as new, as new. First Edition. Fourth Printing. 367, illus., maps, appendix, notes, selected bibliography, index. First-hand accounts of the atomic bomb explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Several weeks after publication, Henry Holt and Company stopped printing and selling the book because the author relied on a fraudulent source for part of the book, and may have fabricated other sources. A controversy also developed about the author's academic credentials; he claimed a Ph.D. degree, but was never awarded one. Seller Inventory # 51469
