About this Item: Robert John Bush, London, 1877. Cloth. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Unpaginated, but 66 leaves bound in red cloth with a pictorial design in gilt. The gutta percha adhesive in the binding has failed entirely and all the leaves are loose, but largely clean and unfrayed - few are dusty in the margins; the spine is chipped at the head and tail and along the edges, but no loss; there is a previous -original? - owner's inscription. Oddly, the title is shown on the front cover as "A Fresh Book of Nonsense.". The fourth and final book of nonsense poetry. The Dong, The Pobble, The Pelicans and Younghy-Bongy-Bo make their appearance. Size: 7¾" x 6½" (195mm x 160mm. Seller Inventory # 024128

Lear had written his first Book of Nonsense for the children of his patron the Earl of Derby in 1845. Laughable Lyrics, the fourth nonsense book, and 'last but not least' (Muir, p. 147) 'included some of the best manifestations of Lear's rhythmic gifts and his flair for the invention of words?' (Thwaite, p. 127).
