About this Item: n.p., Zurich, 1821. Square octavo, aquatint frontispiece, 13pp. with engraved oval portrait at head of first page; a fine copy in the original printed brown wrappers, preserved in a folding bookform case. Only edition: with the famous engraved portrait of John Webber, the official artist of Cook's third voyage. This was the only contemporary portrait of Webber to have been published. This biographical essay, the main source for what little is known of Webber's life, is based on letters and oral communications Wagner collected soon after Webber's death in 1793, including information from the artist's brother Henry. A stand-alone and separately-paginated publication, this was issued as one of a series of small printings put out by the Society of Artists (Kunstler-Gesellschaft) in Zurich who seem to have produced an annual publication every New Year over some decades.Wagner's pamphlet not only features an attractive frontispiece based on Webber's image of the burial platform in Tahiti, one of the more famous images from his Voyages in the South Seas (plate VIII), but is especially notable for the engraved portrait of Webber himself by K. Meyer. For such a prolific artist there are curiously few known likenesses. He did paint a miniature self-portrait now held in Bern, and this painting was used as the basis for a larger work by Johann Daniel Mottet in 1812. One or other of these very similar paintings was evidently the basis for Meyer's engraving. Significantly, the only other lifetime portrait of Webber appears to be John Spiller's marble plaque of the artist in profile (now in the Rex Nan Kivell collection in the National Library of Australia).Forbes knew the work only from the Sir Maurice Holmes copy in the UCLA library. About this Item: London, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1883., 1883. First Edition; 8vo; pp. xvii, 203, 32; portrait frontispiece, 2 maps, 4 b/w illustrations, appendixes; rebacked with original cloth laid down on spine and front, title lettered in gilt on spine, silver illustration to front, adhesive mark of Mullens Library sticker to front of cloth, corners bumped, pages browned, otherwise a very good copy. Mrs Fred Burnaby, also known as Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed, married Captain Fred Burnaby in 1880. Shortly after the wedding, Lizzie was reported to be in poor health, but she recovered and gave birth to a son in May 1880. Within just a few months, however, she and her husband had embarked on largely separate lives, Fred returning to his bachelor quarters and Lizzie spending much of her time abroad in search of a cure for the lung trouble which continued to plague her. In summer 1881 she arrived for the first time at Chamonix, where she ‘saw for the first time those glacier-clad Alpine ranges which were to mean so much to me for the rest of my life.’ Within a fortnight she was able to embark on modest rambles in the surrounding countryside. Her first significant ‘scramble’ was made almost by accident: having planned a leisurely excursion to the lower slopes of Mont Blanc, she and a woman friend, clad ‘in high-heeled buttoned boots and shady hats’, spontaneously decided to climb further. Although unable to complete the climb on this occasion, Lizzie’s appetite had been whetted. During the following summer she scaled Mont Blanc twice, as well as several other difficult peaks, and over the next two decades spent much of her time in Switzerland, climbing in both winter and summer and making more than one hundred ascents, including what is regarded as the first women-only expedition. Later in her climbing career, Lizzieabandoned Switzerland for Norway and Lapland, and over six summers in the region notched up a total of thirty-three climbs, twenty-seven of them first ascents.'' - Our Wicklow Heritage.
