(6), ccii, with 716 woodcuts in text; copy double-ruled in red throughout, with fine hand-colouring in gouache, some woodcuts with silver and gold, initials with red and blue illumination; various marginal repairs, occasionally touching text but not affecting woodcuts, in contemporary German calf over wooden boards, with gilt centre and corner ornaments, brass corner pieces, gilt spine rebacked preserving original, gilt and gauffred edges, new endpapers. A spectacular illuminated copy of first German editions of Gesner's 'Historia Animalium', in fine contemporary German colouring to the more than 1000 woodcuts. This work is a monumental encyclopaedia of the animal kingdom and the first systematic treatise on zoology of the Renaissance. It was 'the most authoritative zoological book between Aristotle and the publication of Ray's classification of fauna in 1693. it remained the standard reference book even as late as Linné [1735]' (Printing and the mind of man). The 'Thierbuch' combines Gesner's two books on quadrupeds, the viviparous and oviparous, first published in Latin in 1551 and 1554 respectively. These were translated into German by Conrad Forer (d. 1594); a few chapters were translated by Johannes Herold. Forer was a Swiss physician who became later a parson in the city of Winterthur. He corresponded with Gessner and wrote a botanical treatise in which he attempted to devise a new system of plant classification' (Wellisch). The illustrations are the first original zoological illustrations and the first naturalistic representations of animals to be published. As such they herald the birth of zoological book illustration. They are the archetypes of much subsequent animal illustrations, even into the 18th century. The woodcuts were cut after paintings by Lukas Schan, some of which survive as part of the Felix Platter collection in the Basle University Library. The German editions contain a further 24 woodcuts which appear here for the first time. The 'Vogelbuch', Gesner's history of birds, is an abridged translation of the 1555 Latin edition by Rudolf Heusslein, a Swiss physician. The woodcuts are the second important suite of ornithological iconography, being contemporary with those of Belon published the same year. They are the precursors of many of Aldrovandi's illustrations, many of which were copied from Gesner. The 'Fischbuch' was translated from the 1558 Latin edition by Conrad Forer. The woodcuts form the fourth great series of ichthyological illustrations, after Belon (1551), Rondelet (1554) and Salviani (1554), but are also the first general series of marine illustrations (including conchology), not confined to fish.Wellisch 23/24.4; 25.5; 26.6; Nissen IVB 350 and ZBI 1552, 1555 (with erroneous collations); VD16 G1728; G1734; G1741. Epitome trium terrae partium, Asiae, Africae et: VADIANUS, Joachim (Joachim

About this Item: Alden & Landis 534/31; Harrisse, BAV 189; JCB I, p. 460; Karrow 58/47.1; Sabin 98279 (erroneously dated 1533); Shirley 70; VD 16, V20. First edition of Vadianus's influential description of the world, with the very important map of the world depicting America for almost the first time, showing the complete outline of South America and according to Sabin "lacking in most of the copies located". The map is a reduced size copy of the world map attributed to Sebastian Münster published in Grynaeus's Novis orbis regionum ac insularum veteribus incognitarum (Basel, 1532) itself primarily based on Waldseemüller's map of 1507.Vadianus describes all the continents, seas and islands, regions, mountains and towns of the world, with separate chapters on Europe, Africa, Asia, Palestine and even Paradise, offering a geographical reading of biblical history. The description of America can be found on pp. 263-273. In the same year an octavo edition was published (without the map), later followed by several other editions.Small worm hole in the outer margin of pp. 175-226. Very good copy. The book of the thousand nights and: ARABIAN NIGHTS]. BURTON,

About this Item: Scheherazade's web: the 1001 nights & comparative literature, J. Ross’s bibliography 10 & 11; cf. Penzer, pp. 126-132 (other Burton club editions). The so-called "manuscript edition" of Richard Burton's celebrated translation of Alf Laylah Wa Laylah, commonly known in English as the Arabian nights. These Arabic tales, cherished in Europe since the early 18th century, are often erotic in content, and in Burton's unexpurgated translation they outraged Victorian England. Burton included numerous footnotes and a scholarly apparatus, offering a vivid picture of Arabian life (including sexual customs), which set his translation apart from earlier English renderings. The present edition (limited to 99 sets, the present being copy no. 49) includes a manuscript leaf from a text by Burton. In the present copy this is a book review by Burton, of a French translation of Johannis de Capua's Latin translation of a Hebrew translation of the Panchatantra, a Sanskrit frame story written several centuries before the Arabian nights. The notes at the head show that it was used as printer’s copy. The title-page of volume one uses the correct main title, The book of the thousand nights and a night, but confusingly mixes it with part of the subtitle of the Supplemental nights: "to the book of the thousand one nights with notes anthropological and explanatory". To add further confusion it says "volume three", though the content is that of volume one. The volume number is clearly a printer's error, apparently corrected early in the press run. Some minor browning to the endpapers, those of the first volume partly detached and with a small pieces torn off, the binding has some very minor wear to the hinges, and a few headbands have been carefully repaired. A fine set. Seller Inventory # J3MA10E7L7XG

About this Item: Cf. Andreas Klein, Johann Georg Jacobi (2012), 359; Nagler VIII, pp. 555-558; Thieme & Becker XXXIII, p. 279. Skilfully executed pen and ink drawing by the notable Swiss draughtsman Johann Heinrich Lips (1758-1817), showing a naval officer on a tropical beach on the Coromandel Coast, being welcomed by four half-naked local women with their five children. In the background are three native men in a small rowing boat touching the beach. The present drawing was made for an illustration in Johann Georg Jacobi's Iris. The illustration was engraved by Lips himself and contains, besides the caption "Die Küste von Coromandel", the subtitle "Au seiner französischen Handschrift", suggesting the drawing was made after one found in a French manuscript.Slightly browned along the edges of the paper (covered by the passepartout) and a few tiny specks. Calculorum qui in corpore ac membris hominum: KENTMANN, Johannes.

About this Item: Adams, G-522/[2]; Durling 2656; Osler 646/[2]; Sinkankas 2366/2; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 82/[8]; Ward 906/[2] & 1251; Wellcome 2804/[2]. First and only edition of a treatise on stones found in the human body, including the first known detailed account of gallstones, well-illustrated with 11 woodcuts showing more than 30 objects. Conrad Gessner included Kentmann's treatise in his compilation, De Omni Rerum Fossilium Genere, but it is separately signed and foliated for separate publication as well.A very good copy with generous margins. The text of slightly more than one page struck through in ink. Fascinating doctor/mineralogist's view of "stones" found in human bodies. Seller Inventory # S1725

Album with 47 charming drawings in several: DRAWINGS]. VOITURON, Paul,

About this Item: For Paul Voituron: Van Praet & D'Hondt, Paul Voituron (1824-1891) en zijn denktank: levensschets en progressief gedachtegoed van een Gentse liberaal (2012). An album containing 47 mostly small pen and ink wash, pencil, watercolour and pastel drawings, several in colour. Several are signed by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) and his sisters(?) Hortense and Virginia Voituron, and the Mary who signed many drawings without a family name may be a Voituron as well. Paul Voituron was to become known as a progressive thinker in Ghent, but the Ghent University Library also has a large collection of his drawings. Other drawings in the album must have been drawn by family friends. The first drawing in the album is dated 1842 and several are dated 1842-1844, so one dated 1831 may have been mounted in the album long after it was drawn. Most of the drawings contain one or more human subjects, sometimes in portraits, other times as figures in landscapes. There are also several flower drawings. Together they give a charming view of daily life in Europe in the early 1840's. A few album leaves are detached and frayed at the edges, but the drawings themselves are in very good condition. The binding has lost its backstrip and is rubbed, with the sewing somewhat loose. A charming set of drawings by young ladies and gentlemen from Ghent on a Grand Tour of Europe. De halosantho seu spermate ceti vulgo dicto,: CORDUS, Valerius.

About this Item: Adams, G-522/[5]; Durling 1033; Osler 646/[5]; Sinkankas 2366/5. First and only edition of a treatise on certain salts sometimes found in crystaline "efflorescences" from the surface of the sea, which Dioscorides and Galen had recommended for the treatment of skin diseases. The Hessian doctor and botanist Valerius Cordus (1515-1544) left this treatise unpublished at his premature death, and Conrad Gesner added a preface and "Corollarium" for its posthumous publication in his compilation, De omni rerum fossilium genere, but the treatise with corollarium is separately signed and foliated for separate publication as well. Gessner's corollarium, slightly longer than the treatise itself, refutes the popular notion that these salts were the sperm of whales. Slightly browned with some occasional stains, once resulting in a small hole (leaf 9), and some, mostly marginal, foxing. Bookblock detached from binding, otherwise in good condition. About this Item: 1770. Condition: Good. Antique print, titled: 'Guillaume Tell ( ).' - This very rare and desirable original antique print depicts the famous William Tell story. Tell is a folk hero of Switzerland. His legend is recorded in a late 15th-century Swiss illustrated chronicle. It is set in the time of the original foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy in the early 14th century.
