About this Item: 1854. A Prominent Rhode Islander and His Son Record Their Impressions of Paris, France and Switzerland [Manuscript]. Hoppin, William Warner [1807-1890]. Hoppin, Frederick Street [1834-1907]. [Diaries Recording Sixteen Months Spent in Paris and Switzerland, October 1845-January, 1846, One Kept by William Warber Hoppi, The Other by His Son, Frederick Street Hoppin]. Two books. [92]; [92] pp. Quarto (8-1/2" x 6-3/4"). Stiff patterned-paper boards. Some creases and moderate edgewear to boards, which are detached, spines perished. Light toning to leaves of both diaries, text in neat hand to rectos and versos of all leaves of the diary kept by Frederick Street Hoppin, a few leaves detached and edgeworn, text in neat hand to 11 leaves of diary kept by William Warner Hoppin. $1,000. * These diaries were kept by two members of a prominent Providence, Rhode Island family. William Warner Hoppin, a lawyer, was the Governor of Rhode Island from 1854 to 1857. Also a lawyer, his son Frederick Street Hoppin was never engaged in active practice and lived the life of a leisured gentleman. William Hoppin's diary commences with the arrival of his arrival in France with his family. It goes on in great detail where the Hoppinses took their apartments in Paris, their experiences with French tutors, their tours around France and their visits with several prominent figures, such as the pope and the king and queen of France (The King said he had visited Newport and Providence and would like to visit them again.) A classic New Englander, Hoppin considered Paris a vulgar, sinful city. The period covered by this diary is October 9, 1845 through January 1846. Overall, his copious details are amazing. Frederick Street Hoppin, then 11 years old, went to the same places with his family. Given his age, his diary offers an interesting perspective on his father's impressions. His diary commences in February in France and goes through to the end of July, when the family paid a visit to Switzerland. Written by two observant individuals, both are wonderful examples of the diaries kept by well-connected wealthy Americans who traveled to Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century.
