Item Description: Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1989. Soft Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1989. xxxvi, 248pp including index. "The great Elizabethan divine Richard Hooker has occupied a prominent place in the intellectual history of the Church of England and sixteenth-century Protestantism but his wider significance has often been neglected. In his introduction to this selection of books from Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, Professor McGrade demonstrates clearly the continued relevance and importance of the particular politico-religious project Hooker undertook and shows that The Laws offer far more than simply an apologia for the Elizabethan religious settlement. The text of this version is based on the authoritative Folger edition and presents those sections of The Laws most important to an understanding of Hooker's wider aims and context.". Book in excellent condition. No inscriptions. Size: 8.5" Tall. Bookseller Inventory # PoliticsEtc004

Item Description: David Nutt, London and Winchester, bookseller's catalogue, 1857, 1857. Later quarter cloth and boards, original printed spine-label, 8vo, 23 cm, viii, 704, [4], 50 pp. 7166 numbered items. A major catalogue, still valuable as a reference. The introduction refers to the contents as including "lists of editions of the Sacred Writings, occupying twenty pages - of copies of Fathers of the Church, Doctors, Schoolmen, and Ecclesiastical Historians, filling eighty-five pages - of Liturgies and Liturgical Literature, extending over forty-one pages - of Councils and Synods, including Canons, Decrees, and Catechisms, and Articles and Confessions of Faith, in nineteen pages - of Canon and Ecclesiastical Law, defining Church Polity and Discipline, in thirteen pages - of Monastic History and Rule, as also of works connected with the Society of Jesus, and its propagandist labours, particularly in America and the East, in forty-three pages - of the disciples of Aquinas and Duns-Scotus, the Thomists and Scottists, in three pages - of Hebrew and Syriac Literature, with Jewish History and Antiquities, Rabbinical Commentators, and their opponents, in twenty-two pages - of Literary History and Bibliography conducive to the Study of Theology, in eight pages - and to the Appendix to all these divisions of one hundred pages. These classes, however, form but a small portion of the contents of the 701 pages of which the entire Catalogue consists ; for there is also scarcely a single work of any note in Dogmatical, Ascetical, Polemical, or Exegetical Theology, or relating to Ecclesiastical History and Antiquities, published in Latin, and but few in German, which will not be found enumerated in the general alphabet; whilst the principal French, Italian, and Spanish Divines, and other great pulpit Orators of the Continent, who have written in their native languages, have in no case been intentionally overlooked." Item Description: London : Printed by J. Best, for Andrew Crook ., 1662., 1662. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1662 1ed Richard Hooker Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity Church of England Puritans Important English theologian / Large Leather FOLIO Richard Hooker (1554 – 1600) was an English priest in the Church of England and an influential theologian. He was one of the most important English theologians of the sixteenth century. His defense of the role of redeemed reason informed the theology of the seventeenth century Caroline divines and later provided many members of the Church of England with a theological method which combined the claims of revelation, reason and tradition. He developed his doctrines in his Treatise on the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. In conception the Treatise was a ‘livre de circonstance’, designed to justify episcopacy, but it embodied a broadly conceived philosophical theology. His opposition to the Puritans, who held to the literal following of the Scriptures as an absolute in the sense that whatever was not expressly commanded in Scripture was unlawful, led him to elaborate a whole theory of law, based on the 'absolute' fundamental of natural law whose 'seat is in the bosom of God, her voice the harmony of the world. The Puritans were wholly mistaken in regarding the Bible as a mechanical code of rules; for not everything that is rightful finds precise direction in the Scriptures. In a similar way the permanence of the law does not preclude development of detail. Item Description: Published: London : Printed by R. White, for Rob. Scot, Tho. Basset, John Wright and Rich. Chiswel, and are to be sold by Robert Boulter ., 1676., 1676. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1676 Richard Hooker Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity Church of England Puritans Hooker (1554 – 1600) important English theologian Richard Hooker (1554 – 1600) was an English priest in the Church of England and an influential theologian. Dedicated to the King's most Excellent Majesty, Charles II. By whose royal father (near his martyrdom) the former five books (then only extant) were commended to his dear children, as an excellent means to satisfie private scruples, and settle the publick peace of this church and kingdom .
