About this Item: (New York), 1898. Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Oblong 4to, printed pictorial wrappers in red and black, piece lacking from upper left corner of lower cover, resulting in loss on a couple of words, 24pp. text proper + single inserted leaf at the end, to use to subscribe to Crawford's own ALASKA PROSPECTING AND MINING CORPORATION (this venture, into which he'd invested enormous sums of money - his and others' - wound up being a consummately fradulent scheme, with not a single prospective asset to the name). Illustrated throughout. Captain Jack Crawford served in the Civil War and carved out a future career path for himself during 1875-76 as a journalist and as a promoter for the Black Hills country, where he travelled and scouted. Later, he had a brief fling with Buffalo Bill Cody on the stage, but he eventually wound up excelling on the touring lecture circuit, and that guise is what he is today best remembered for. A good+ copy. Seller Inventory # E-37/39

About this Item: London - DMidwinter and J Tonson, 1716. Hardcover. First edition. First Edition of the first 55 essays of The Freeholder. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Atoniette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. There was another edition printed in 1716 with 400 pages. Collated, complete. Addison was best known, alongside his friend Richard Steeleforfounding The Spectator paper which first appeared daily.
