Couverture souple. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Edition originale. Title: La Mort le Roi Artu: (The Death of Arthur) from the old French 'Lancelot' of Yale 229 with Essays, Glossaries and Notes to the Text Author: Willingham, Elizabeth Moore (ed) Price: Euro 150,00.- ISBN: 9782503516769 Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2008. 28cm., pbk., 322pp., 28 color plates. The multi-volume project responds to long-standing lacunae in Old French text study and Arthurian scholarship, in that it aims to provide a linguistically and scribally authentic text of a single illustrated Arthurian manuscript; in this case, it is one that has never before been edited, collated, or translated. Since research on text, language, and manuscript may be impeded by editorial policies operative in older editions of medieval narratives and since viewing the manuscripts directly is often difficult or impossible, the editorial board set protocols for the Lancelot Prose of 229 editions that would address the need for authentic, accessible texts, packaged with ancillaries to address a variety of reading and experience levels. At the same time, the board wished to take into account the potential of electronic images to enhance scholarly work and teaching based on the editions. The idea of a strictly "diplomatic edition" was discarded in light of digital technology¿s ability to provide high-resolution images of an original that are useful for close private study and public viewing. Thus each edition provides a useful, portable, authentic reading of Old French Arthurian narrative that is supported externally by online electronic images and internally by a selection of wonderful illustrations and a variety of ancillary materials and essays developed through years of study and teaching based on Yale 229. The Mort begins with the return of Bohors from the quest of the Holy Grail and narrates the declining fortunes of King Arthur and his Round Table through the dissolution of the Table and the "death" of Arthur. The tale includes Morgain¿s efforts to convince Arthur of Lancelot and Guinevere¿s adultery, Lancelot¿s battle to save Guinevere from burning at the stake, the dramatic discovery of Guinevere and Lancelot by Arthur¿s knights, the departure of Arthur from his kingdom to fight Lancelot, and Arthur¿s leaving his Kingdom, the keys to his treasury, and his Queen in the hands of the treacherous Mordret. In the closing folios, Arthur is mortally wounded by Mordret at the apocalyptic Battle of Salisbury Plain, and Lancelot returns to avenge Arthur against Mordret¿s two sons at the final Battle of Winchester. The book closes shortly after the death of Lancelot, with a rejection of the life of court and chivalry in favor of penance and spiritual fulfillment. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. Three volumes. 12mo. Half dark red cloth. Introduction and notes by Thomas Wright, The Introduction is of bibliographical importance as it sketches the history of the early editions of Malory: Caxton (one complete copy; one incomplete); de Worde (two editions, one copy of each known); Copland; East; and finally the edition of 1634. Each volume with the engraved circular bookplate of Emily Morris Gallatin on the front pastedowns. The simple signature of Arthur Lewis, 1949, on each of the front free endpapers. And on the front free endpaper of volume 1 a nearly full page inscription dated 2018. Only volume 1 has been fully opened; the remaining volumes are partially unopened. Aside from the inscription and signatures, these volumes are in very good condition showing only traces of wear at the corners, edges and spine tips. This is a curious edition. We have marked it a first edition, but not without hesitation. The first printing of this work was in 1858. The second edition, so marked on the title pages, was in 1866 (vols. 1 and 3, but still 1865 in vol. 2). (And, for completeness, there was an edition in 1889 marked Third Edition the title page.) So the publisher (and, for that matter, the bibliography) have given us three editions: 1858, 1866 and 1889. This title is dated 1865. The Introduction of 1858 is repeated in its entirety, and is followed by a single paragraph by the author dated 1865 in which he calls this a new edition, "carefully revised". Given the above we are calling this a first edition, revised. Gaines does not list this printing. The other editions are listed at A10.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London, R. Wilks, 1816. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. Three volumes, complete. An important entry in the Arthurian canon. I guess it's technically the eighth edition given the six editions between Caxton's 1485 issue and the 1634 edition published by Jacob Bloome. Then boom, like a stagecoach two centuries later, two turn up at once (actually three if you include Southey's of 1817). The Walker and Edwards edition of 1816 seems to have been published prior to this Wilks edition, though the text seems to have been prepared in 1815 given the preface. Of the three, it appears the Wilks issue sold the poorest, perhaps given the editing of all the fruity language. The text is based on the 1634 edition, and the book includes a folding plate replicating an illustration from that edition and a copy of the title page. From the library of S.A.S. Metheny. This copy includes a note from writer George Lillie Craik about the various editions, including the other 1816 edition and Southey's 1817 issue (later backing on the note). Presumably later cloth, though still fairly old, fairly amateurish covering but presentable enough. The labels have faded though. Rubbing to the lower edges. One volume has pretty much split at the lower hinge. Internally excellent. [10720, Hyraxia Books].
