Once made, it is unforgettable; it tells us something of significance about each of the pair, and a good deal, directly and indirectly about the Arthurian stories which underlie the strange hybrid. The Beardsley Le Morte Darthur could hardly have been expected, or even wanted; now we have it, who would wish away this most extraordinary incident in the whole strange corpus of Arthurian works?" Published by E. P. Dutton (1927)
Quantity available: 1
From: The Reluctant Bookseller (Albany, NY, U.S.A.)
About this Item: E. P. Dutton, 1927. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Beardsley, Aubrey (illustrator). 1st Edition. Not until this, the third edition, was an effort made to collect the fullest body of those illustrations which Beardsley had originally intended to accompany the seminal text of Malory. Published in America by E. P. Dutton in 1927 in an edition limited to 1600 copies. Introduction by Professor John Rhys and a note on Beardsley by Aymer Vallance. Beardsley devoted no small degree of himself - and his extraordinary talent - to the illustration of Le Morte D'Arthur. Lacking the original dust jacket, this is a very good copy marred only by abrasion to the cloth at the top and bottom foredges of the front board and just a slight bit of rubbing to the lower corner of the front board decoration. Bound in cloth with beveled edges, spine and front panel decorated and lettered in gold - a beautiful and visually appealing example of what happens when the proper literary work is illustrated by the proper artist - and then presented with appropriate care by the right publisher. The book bears the original woodcuts of J.J. Lankes on bookplates of the owners ( husband and wife ) Harry O'Neil and Margaret MvcPherson. A very attractive copy. Seller Inventory # 002757

From: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. (London, United Kingdom)
About this Item: London: J. M. Dent, 1893, 1893. 2 volumes, quarto. Original yellow cloth, spines lettered in gilt, spines and front covers stamped in gilt with floral patterns, publisher's device to rear covers in gilt, cloth bookmarks, top edges gilt. Spines a little darkened and ends worn, cover of vol. 1 a little sunned and vol. 2 lightly foxed. Light wear to extremities, an occasional offsetting, else contents bright. With illustrated frontispieces and 17 similar plates, black and white illustrations by Beardsley. First edition, one of 1,500 ordinary paper copies, of a total edition of 1,800 copies. In 1892, seeking to emulate the books of the Kelmscott Press, John M. Dent commissioned the twenty-year-old Beardsley to produce this edition of Le Morte D'Arthur. The 351 designs appearing in the first edition required eighteen months for the artist to complete. Bored with the project, Beardsley at last refused to complete Dent's original projection of 500 drawings. Of this, Beardsley's first major work, John Lewis states: "In Le Morte D'Arthur Beardsley learnt his job, but the result is no bungling student's work If he had never illustrated another book, this edition of Morte D'Arthur could stand as a monument of decorative book illustration" (Lewis, The Twentieth Century Book, pp. 148-9).
