"Fourcroy's chief work," this set was first published as a set of 6 volumes in 5 quartos before being produced as this first 8vo. edition shortly thereafter (Thornton & Tully, p. 170). The work gives a complete and thorough account of the state of chemistry before its publication, and also contains a short history of chemistry. "This great treatise contained more information than any previously publishedâ¦In the Connaissances chimiques Fourcroy included the vast knowledge of chemistry acquired during his year as a professor, much of it based on his own unpublished observations" (Smeaton 76-77). Fourcroy was a French chemist who collaborated with Lavoisier, Berthollet, and Guyton de Morveau to standardize chemical nomenclature. He was one of the earliest converts to Laviosier's new chemistry. Fourcroy "undertook the great task of completing the chemical section of the Encyclopà die mà thodique, which Guyton had to abandon after completing volume I," and was instrumental in advancing a "new chemistry" organized in a "systematic order" (DSB, Vol. V, 90). Volume 11 is most often missing from the set. Duveen p. 226; Gascoigne 7262.6; Smeaton pp. 76-77; Thornton, John L. & R.I.J. Tully. Scientific Books, Libraries, and Collectors. 3rd ed.
