Item Description: Le Crapouillot, Paris, 1929. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Special edition on the city of Paris, featuring photographs by Eugène Atget (from the collection of Berenice Abbott). Soft cover. Letterpress printed wrappers with tipped-in black-and-white plate on cover (stapled binding); no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Eugène Atget (and additional uncredited photographers). 80 pp., with 33 black-and-white illustrations by Atget, 1 illustration by Tsuguharu Foujita, 3 illustrations by Paule Marrot, 1 illustration by Serge (Maurice Féaudierre), 3 film stills from "Paris qui dort" (1925) by René Clair, several aerial photographs of Paris, 19th-century engravings, and bound advertisements printed on colored paper. 12-3/4 x 9-3/4 inches. Fair (tear to heel of spine (affecting all pages and wrapper); wrapper with pronounced toning, creasing, stains and wear to the extremities (but intact); text block partially pulled away from wrapper; rusted binding staples have stained pages at binding points; interior pages have light creasing, wear to the extremities, and faint toning (more pronounced at colored paper advertisements). The special section entitled "Aspects de Paris," in which Atget's photographs appear, features essays (in French) on Parisian arrondisements and landmarks by Pierre Mac Orlan (Montmartre), André Salmon (Montparnasse), Bernard Zimmer (Saint-Sulpice and Saint-Germain-des-Prés), Paul Reboux (Le Palais-Royal), Galtier-Boissière (De Ménilmuche à la Villetouse), Thomas Raucat (Le Bois de Boulogne), Oberlé (Faubourg Saint-Germain), Claude Blanchard (Rue de Grenelle - Gare Saint-Lazare), René Kerdyk (Bateaux parisiens), Lucas-Dubreton (Une bonne vie d'autrefois), Paul Fuchs (Le Quartier latin vers 1890), Van Moppès (La place Vendôme), Michel Vaucaire (Porte Maillot), Louis Léon-Martin (Le quartier du Champ de Mars), L. Cheronnet (Des Boulevards à l'Arc de Triomphe), together with additional contributions. From David Campany: "In the late 1920s there had been a burst of interest in Atget's photographs, mostly following his death in 1927.In May of 1929 the French monthly magazine Le Crapouillot published a special issue on Paris. Atget's elegiac shot of Notre Dame seen through the branches of a tree appears on the cover as a halftone print with a white border. It was printed separately and pasted down to look like a print in an album. Around thirty images by Atget, all from the collection of Abbott, illustrated a number of short texts on different parts of the city. Pierre Mac Orlan wrote about Montmartre but did not refer directly to Atget's work (perhaps because that same month another publication, Merle, was running a piece by him on the photographer).".
