Item Description: In Venetia : per li Bertani, 1659. Giovanni Botero nacque a Bene-Vagienna [Cuneo] nel 1544. Gesuita, dopo lunghi contrasti con i superiori, uscé dall'ordine nel 1580. Dimoré per alcuni anni a Milano, e poi in Francia nel 1585. Nel 1586 fu accolto a Milano da Margherita Trivulzio, madre di Federico Borromeo, che lo affiancé al figlio come consigliere e lo mandé a Roma per favorirne l'ingresso nell'ambiente ecclesiastico. Nel 1599 entré al servizio dei Savoia, fu precettore dei figli di Carlo Emanuele I. Negli ultimi anni si riavviciné ai confratelli gesuiti. Moré a Torino nel 1617. Botero scrisse molte opere, in latino e in italiano, in versi e in prosa. Tra le sue opere sono: La sapienza regia (De regia sapientia, 1583), le vite dei Pré ncipi cristiani (1601-1603), e soprattutto i trattati po litici: Delle cause della grandezza e magnificenza delle citté(1588), i dieci libri Della ragion di stato (1589), le Relazioni universali (1591-1596). Della ragion di stato fu l'opera che gli diede la maggior fama, considerata tra le pié autorevoli critiche alle teorie politiche di Machiavelli. Egli si pone nel pieno della cultura controriformistica, dimostra come necessaria la soggezione del pré ncipe alle virté religiose e ai dettami della chiesa (cattolica) che é la sola a garantire la giustificazione etica del suo operato. Brusoni era un letterato (Badia Polesine, Rovigo, 1614 circa - Torino dopo il 1686). Fece parte, negli anni della sua dimora veneziana (1639 circa -1676) dell'Accademia degli Incogniti, scrittore assai fecondo, ha lasciato, tra l'altro, ventisei racconti (Curiosissime novelle amorose, 1653) e una trilogia di romanzi intessuti di liriche, conversazioni, questioni teoriche e commenti storici (La gondola a tre remi; Il carrozzino alla moda e La peota smarrita, 1657-62). Opera suddivisa in quattro parti, le prime tre con marca tipografica in silografia ai frontespizi; 4 carte geografiche ripiegate incise in rame raffiguranti l'Europa, l'Asia, l'Africa e l'America; capolettera entro vignette ornate, testatine e finalini incisi in legno. Pergamena semifloscia coeva con lacci e unghie, titolo manoscritto al dorso, tagli rossi. Le carte dell'Europa, Asia, Africa sono del cartografo Giuseppe Rosaccio (Pordenone 1530 circa - 1620 circa) nel secondo stato, firmate in basso a sinistra in lastra, incise da Girolamo Porro (Padova 1520 -Venezia 1604), famoso per le incisioni delle mappe nella traduzione di Girolamo Ruscelli della Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo, 1574, e i rami delle mappe di pi? Famose Isole del Mondo di Porcacchi, del 1572. Il nostro esemplare contiene la mappa dell'America, che deriva da quella di D'Anania nell'edizione del 1582 in primo stato; repertoriata da Philip Burden in "The Mapping of North America" n? 86. Giovanni Botero (1544 - 1617) fu considerato per pi? di un secolo il miglior geografo esistente.Bell'esemplare che presenta restauro al margine est. della tav. Europa. Lievi saltuarie fioriture, piccolo camminamento di tarlo di circa 3 mm al margine inf. da pag. 154 a pag. 192 che non lede il testo. Concepita originariamente come un esame statistico della propagazione ecumenica del cristianesimo, l'opera si allargÚ via via nel successivo quinquennio fino a costituire un repertorio organico di antropogeografia, con notizie sistematiche sulla configurazione fisica, la densit? demografica, le risorse economiche, la potenza militare, la costituzione politica di tutti gli Stati del mondo. Frutto di laboriosa compilazione, le Relazioni, per il metodo accurato e l'oculatezza nel vaglio dei dati raccolti, segnarono un progresso enorme rispetto alle analoghe opere allora in uso, e per quasi un secolo rimasero un testo istituzionale e informativo di larghissima diffusione, il vero e proprio manuale geopolitico di tutta la classe dirigente europea, con un centinaio di edizioni e traduzioni in latino (Helmstadt 1596), tedesco (Monaco 1596), inglese (Londra 1601), spagnolo (Gerona 1603), e polacco (Cracovia 1609). La parte prima Ë una descrizione generale, sotto l'aspetto fisico e antropico, del mondo conosciuto; la parte seconda una silloge di dati statistici di prevalente interesse politico; la parte terza uno studio sulla distribuzione delle varie religioni sui continenti terrestri, con notizie storiche sulle recenti attivit? missionarie; la parte quarta tratta specificamente delle religioni degli indigeni delle Americhe e dell'introduzione del Vangelo in quelle regioni. In our copy the second volume of part one (i:2) is bound between libros iii and iv of part one. The second part is printed by Giacomo Vincenti and the third by Gio. Battista Ussio. With engraved vignettes on title pages and four double page engraved maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The map of Africa is strengthened at inner margins, with a hole, and faded in a few places. The map of America is browned (due to paper quality), with tear at fold and another small tear without any loss, frayed at outer margins. The other two maps are fine. Some old annotations and underlinings in ink in the first part. Some staining and age browning, more severe in places. Contemporary vellum, stained, with title in manuscript on spine. Bookplate. Early edition of Botero's famous work; a political and geographical description of different countries around the known world at the time. First published at Rome in 1591-93, reissued many times and translated into several languages. Giovanni Botero (1533-1617), Jesuit and Italian ecclesiastic, was secretary to Bishop Carlo Borromeo, and later to Archbishop Frederico Borromeo.
