About this Item: Joseph Pigelet for Techener, Paris, 1892. Two volumes (complete with the supplement). A SPLENDID COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CULINARY TEXT OF THE MIDDLE AGES. Taillevent composed this text during the 14th century, in Middle French. Radically different versions (in modernized language) were printed from the late 15th century until 1604, but the original text remained unpublished until this edition. Right after the book appeared, the editors learned about another manuscript (in the Vatican Library) and published it as a supplement, with continuous pagination. [2] leaves; LXVIII, 182, [1], 183-300 pp. with 9 plates (one double page, one folding). This edition includes a lengthy scholarly introduction, with descriptions of the manuscripts and a detailed bibliography; the edition of the text, with copious scholarly notes; a reprint of the earliest of the modernized editions; the additions of Pierre Gaudoul; a transcript of another, far briefer 14th-century cookbook; documentation; and an index. Edition limited to 350 copies, of which this is one of 300 numbered copies printed on extremely fine Marais wove paper. Beautifully printed by Pigelet, with the title-page in red and black. 4to. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND IN QUARTER MOROCCO AND MARBLED BOARDS. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, original wraps bound in. Tiny traces of wear to extremities of binding. INTERNALLY BRIGHT AND FINE. An excellent set. Bossuat 5611; Bitting, p. 370; Vicaire (Manuel) VII, 843. Very rare. Seller Inventory # 3010
