About this Item: [monastery Scriptorium for Noble class], 1470. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Unknown. circa 1470, Dutch / German. Two sided-leaf, in red, blue and black ink. Written in miniscule on vellum. 3.75" x 2.75" Anonymous; Psalters such as the one this leaf comes from were created in late medieval monastery scriptoria. Minor marginal toning, else about fine. When, in the fifteenth century, a King from the region would hold court in the numerous castles throughout his realm, the nobility would follow with their prayer books. These were intentionally manufactured on this miniature scale by the monasteries to allow the nobility to easily carry them on these journeys. This remarkably well-preserved red, blue and black ink two-sided page originated in one such psalter. Nice example of incunabula - printed artifacts originating prior to 1501. -eph1. Illuminated leaf, 201 x 132 mm., 2-line initial in burnished gold on blue and pink ground, numerous 1-line initials in blue and burnished gold alternately, each with calligraphic penwork, 21 lines in gothic text. An unusual English Psalter leaf with free marginal decoration. About this Item: 1270. Large historiated initial of a saint holding a book, on a burnished gold ground; painted in a square frame with full length wavy marginal extension of pink and orange on burnished gold.Size of leaf: 115 x 90mm. 19 lines of gothic text. Text: End of psalm 51 and beginning of psalm 52 which begins: ?The fool hath said in his heart there is no God?This leaf comes from a manuscript of an almost miniature Psalter for the use of lay people, some time earlier than the first Books of Hours. The style of the figure with the flowing draperies and exaggeratedly long fingers bears comparison with similar psalters produced in the last quarter of the 13th century. The manuscript from which our leaf comes was dispersed soon after the sale of the manuscript in 1977, and there aree clear indications that the manuscript was not produced in a single scriptorium, but was the product of a co-operative of vellum producers, copyists illuminators, correctors and bookbinders. Brugge has been suggested as the most likely place of production, maybe close to Sint-Donaas; perhaps 500-2000 psalters may have been produced in Brugge in the 3rd quarter of the 13th century, probably more than the local demand; this suggests that many were aimed at the export market. The manuscript from which our leaf comes may have been for the English market since there was an early English signature on one of the leaves. Lower portion of initial worn, colours lightly faded. T. M. Buijtendorp will publish an article concerning this psalter in a Flemish historical magazine Handelingen van het genootschap voor geschiednis (article with Dutch summary), to be published in Spring 2008.
