Item Description: The Limited Editions Club, NY, 1942. Weston, Edward (illustrator). First edition thus. 2 volumes. 4to., xxix, 123 pp.; 124-264 pp., 50 photographic plates. Illustrated boards with leather labels. There are barely perceptible spots of light rubbing at base of the spines and on the leather spine labels, otherwise these are fine and bright. Housed in the publisher's cloth slipcase with an edge rubbed paper label on spine. SIGNED by the photographer. In 1917, Edward (Henry) Weston was elected a member of the London Salon, then considered the highest honor in Pictorialism. Later that year, after learning of Stieglitz, Steichen and Strand's break with Pictorialism, he too repudiated Pictorialism; "That whole soft focus period in retrospect seems like a staged act; I even dressed to suit the part." Also in 1917, Weston claims to have started his famous DAYBOOKS, and a copy of LEAVES OF GRASS bearing Weston's signature has passed through this bookseller's hands. Although highly romantic, many regard Whitman's LEAVES OF GRASS as a forerunner of modernism, long an influence to artists of all fields. To say that this book is responsible for Weston's transformation as an artist is to presume more than would seem reasonable without a direct statement from him; however, it can be said that Whitman's influence endured, for in 1941 Weston accepted a commission from the Limited Editions Club to illustrate a new edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, published in 1942 with 50 photos by Weston. Earlier, in 1930, Weston made this statement which rings of the influence of Whitman, "Life is a coherent whole: rocks, clouds, trees, shells, torsos, smokestacks, peppers are interrelated, interdependent parts of the whole. Rhythms from one become symbols of all." (See the article by Alan Trachtenberg "Edward Weston's America: The Leaves of Grass Project" in EW 100: CENTENNIAL ESSAYS IN HONOR OF EDWARD WESTON. Untitled 41, 1986.) Limited to 1500 copies, signed by Weston. Bookseller Inventory # 51864

Item Description: New York: The Limited Editions Club. First Edition, 1942. Two Volumes. Leaves Of Grass, By Walt Whitman [1876 with various later editions], Illustrated with photographs by Edward Weston. Copy Number 1097/1500cc, SIGNED by Weston on the Colophon in Volume II. A Fine set, in illustrated decorative paper covered boards (swirling grasses), brown leather spine labels stamped in gilt, in glassine dustwrappers, in dark chocolate brown cloth covered slipcase with spine label in green. The glassine, which disintegrates spontaneously with age, is present, protected by an acetate over-wrap, but is fragmenting. 264pp, consecutively paginated. The idea of illustrating a collectible literary classic with the work of an avant-garde photographer was a revolutionary idea in 1942, and this title is one of the most collectible in the LEC series. The text is printed on thick pale green paper stock, and the photographic plates are reproduced on slick finish. Many of the images have not been reproduced elsewhere, and the whole represents a fascinating documentation--not picaresque, not abstract--but brilliantly "illustrating" the spirit of Whitman's book- length paean to America. Quite scarce in the original glassine, with slipcase. Bookseller Inventory # B775XD0JJE

Item Description: [the author], Camden, New Jersey, 1882. "Author's edition," signed, one of approximately 225 copies. With 2 engraved portraits of the author, by Hollyer and Linton. 382 pp. 8vo. Signed author's edition, with an autograph postcard signed. "Author's edition," signed by Whitman on the title-page, this copy with a postcard signed by Whitman loosely inserted. A beautiful copy of this edition of Leaves of Grass, bearing several marks of Whitman's direct involvement in the book's production and distribution. Whitman issued this edition himself after the book had been labeled obscene by the district attorney, and Boston publisher Osgood - who had already sold through three printings from 1881-82 - backed off. Osgood delivered the plates and roughly 225 copies in sheets to Whitman, who had new title-pages printed, which he signed. Undertaking to sell the edition as well, Whitman had cards printed up advertising the book for $3 and instructing that orders be sent to his 328 Mickle Street address in Camden. Inserted in this copy is a receipt for one such order in the form of an AUTOGRAPH POSTCARD SIGNED from Whitman to Frederick L. Manning, Counselor at Law, in Waterloo, New York. Dated March 16, 1886 from 328 Mickle Street, it reads: "I have just sent the book ? As soon as it reaches you safely, will you kindly forward me a postal card, notifying me? Walt Whitman." The postcard bears Manning's reply, "yours rec'd," in the lower left corner, with a return postmark from Waterloo at upper right. In his daybook entry for March 16, Whitman recorded having sent a copy of the author's edition to Manning. This edition includes two engraved portraits of Whitman - the famous Hollyer portrait which served as the frontispiece for the first edition of 1855, as well as the Linton portrait after the photograph by G.C. Potter. Myerson A2.7.c3 Original green cloth, edges beveled, spine stamped in gold, t.e.g., yellow endpapers. Loss to corners of pp. 21-2 & 23-4, a hint of wear at extremities, but a bright, fresh, very fine copy. In a custom green half morocco slipcase and chemise With 2 engraved portraits of the author, by Hollyer and Linton. 382 pp. 8vo "Author's edition," signed, one of approximately 225 copies. Item Description: Self Published, Camden, New Jersey, 1889. 70th Birthday Edition. Whitman, Walt. LEAVES OF GRASS with Sands at Seventy & a Backward Glance o'er Travel'd Roads. Camden, New Jersey, [May 31st,] 1889. Privately Printed. First edition thus. 8vo., 382pp + 20pp. Late 20th-century limp black morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A very good copy showing some use with some modest restoration to the spine crown & corners. Custom clamshell case. One of only 300 copies of Leaves of Grass printed in commemoration of Whitman's 70th birthday, boldly signed by Whitman on the title page. With six portraits of the author, including the famous original mounted frontispiece photograph with a butterfly resting on his finger. This copy is further enhanced by its association with Whitman's great friend & his literary executor, Richard Maurice Bucke, who has inscribed & signed the front fly-leaf: "J. N. Greenshields from his friend R. M. Bucke [three line quotation from "I Sing The Body Electric", these lines underscored in the text] Asylum, London, Ont. 6 Nov. '95." Greenshields was a prominent Montreal lawyer & important financier. Bucke was born in England & raised in Canada, studied medicine & served as superintendent of the London, Ontario Asylum for the insane from 1877 until his death in 1902. He wrote two enthusiastic studies of Whitman; Walt Whitman: A Contemporaneous Study, [1883] [was the first biography of Whitman ever written] & Walt Whitman: Man and Poet, [1897]. Bucke helped edit Whitman's Complete Writings, [1902] & In Re Walt Whitman, [1893]. Bucke's Cosmic Consciousness, [1901] reflects much of Whitman's mysticism. "Whitman's influence over Bucke, a prematurely modern man smothered by the starched collars & repressed sexuality of the period, was profound. Whitman's fearless, infectious enthusiasm, prodigious lust for life & distain of convention consumes Bucke & frees him from his social bondage". An important & notable Association Copy. "When the superintendent of the Canadian insane asylum, Dr. Maurice Bucke, meets poet Walt Whitman, his life and that of his wife and patients is radically changed. Like Dr. Bucke, Whitman has avant-garde ideas on the subject of mental illness. "Dreamers" is based on true events." - From a review of the 1990 NFB film Beautiful Dreamers, staring Rip Torn as Whitman & Colm Feore as Bucke. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 29228

Whitman was personally involved in the printing of this Centennial Edition. "Leaves of Grass and Two Rivulets. formed a complex, multi-faceted centennial offering that provided trenchant commentary on the century-old country, mixing indictment and praise, offsetting despair at failures with hope for the future, and juxtaposing prose and poetry" (Folsom & Price, Re-Scripting Walt Whitman, p. 106).
