All are black cloth covered boards with gold text and graphics on front panel and spine.  Volume I is signed by the author on the front-free end-paper. None are price clipped. Please use close-up option for best inspection. Additional photos available at your request.   Vol. I: A Study in Command. 1942. Small scuff near center of back board panel.  Light rubs at tail of board spine and parallel to lower edge on back panel.  Several small stain marks on upper (outside) page edges.  Previous owner's book plate on front paste down.  Signed by the author on the front free end-paper.  Book is internally clean and text block is sound.  DJ: Is sun-aged, spine is faded. Head of spine has loss of 1 3/8" by 1/4" with adjacent creases and closed tears of up to 1/4". Tail of spine has tiny chips and several closed vertical tears of from 1/8" - 1/4" and chip on front corner of 3/8" by 1/4". Lower edge on front panel (just below "Author") has 1/4" closed vertical tear with adjacent crease. Lower front right fore-edge corner has 1 1/8" closed vertical tear along the fold.  Front fore-edge fold has 1/2" horizontal tear near the center.  Upper front fore-edge corner is rubbed and creased and with a 1/4"closed vertical tear.  Upper left corner on front panel is rubbed with loss of 1/2" by 1/4".  Upper right corner of back panel has 3/8" closed vertical tear.  Upper left fore-edge corner on back panel is rubbed with tiny chips and minimal loss.  Lower left fore-edge corner on back corner is stained; two 1/8" chips along the edge. Vol II: Cedar Mountain to Chancellorsville. 1943.  Small amount of creasing and rubs at edges and corners on tail of board spine.  Previous owner's book plate on front paste down.  Previous owner's inscription on front free end-paper, otherwise book is internally clean and tight.  DJ: Spine is sunned.  All folds and are creased and a bit sunned as well.  Head of jacket spine has loss on back corner of 3/4'' by up to 1/2"; front corner loss is 3/8" by 3/8".  Edge is rubbed across the width and there are several closed vertical tears of up to 3/8" and with adjacent creases.  Tail of jacket spine has small amount of rubs and chips with loss on corners up 1/4" or less.  Upper edge on back panel has several closed vertical tears from 1/4" to 5/8". Upper left fore-edge corner on back panel has loss of 1/8" with adjacent closed vertical tear of 3/8" along the fold.  Upper edge on front panel has several horizontal creases and a 1/4" closed vertical tear near the left corner and several 1/8" closed vertical tears near the upper right corner.  Upper right front fore-edge corner is rubbed with loss of 3/8" by 1/4".  Front fore-edge fold is creased vertically and horizontally and has several horizontal closed tears of up to 3/8".  Lower front and back edges have a number of small chips and creases.   Vol III: Gettysburg to Appomattox. 1944. A few light scuffs on front and back board panels. Horizontal creasing across head of board spine; corners are creased at tail of board spine.  Includes attached fold-out map.  Dust Jacket: DJ is soiled to various degrees overall.  Front spine and fore-edge folds are creased and rubbed with several closed vertical tears of 1" or less just to the left and parallel to the fold. Upper and lower edges on front panel have a number of horizontal creases; lower edge has loss of 1" by not quite 1/4".  Lower front fore-edge corner has loss of 1/8" by 1/8" with adjacent closed tear of 1/8"; other fore-edge corners are rubbed but with minimal loss.  Head and tail of spine are chipped and creased.  Head of spine has two 1/2" closed vertical tears along the edge; tail of spine has small tears but loss on front corner of 1/8" by 5/8".  Upper edge on back panel has 1/4" closed vertical tear above the "L" in Lee. Hardly noticeable rubbing to extremities and one corner on Vol. II slightly nudged, only. Soft deckle fore-edges. Gilt lettering to spines and fronts of black cloth-covered boards. 2,395 pp. with appendices, principle manuscript sources, acknowledgments, bibliographies, and indices. SIGNED by Douglas Southall Freeman on the half-title of Volume I. Dustjackets: Edgewear. Small chips missing from bottom of spines. All volumes show original price of $5.00 to front upper flap, and are mylar protected. Each jacket front features a black and white illustration with title lettering in red, blue and green, respectively. Photographs and short narratives of eight of Lee's predecessors and lieutenants begin each volume. 101 maps. A large, 17 x 17", fold-out map titled Battlegrounds of the Army of Northern Virginia follows index of volume 3. Covering the generals of the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War who fought under Robert E. Lee. Volume One, Manassas to Malvern Hill, could be regarded as the book of Beauregard, Johnston, Magruder, D.H. Hill, Garnett, Jeb Stuart, Ewell, Gustavus Smith, and Stonewall Jackson; Volume Two, Cedar Mountain to Chancellorsville continues by giving us a look at John Hood, Robert Rodes, John Cooke, Ramseur, Pender and Wilcox; Volume Three, Gettysburg to Appomattox concludes with the "deepening twilight of the South's declining military might, to the tragic inward collapse of the Command and the formal surrender in 1865," (back cover volume 3).
