Spine has gilt titles, cover has black titles with illustration. Brown cloth cover. Inside front cover shows something glued and taken out. Some marginal comments, and underlining ; Melville was the chief engineer aboard the ill-fated Jeannette, a ship that was financed by James Gordon Bennett and the New York Hearld, which departed San Francisco in 1879 on a voyage of discovery into the Arctic polar waters. Eight pages of publisher's ads at end. Boards bumped at tips and lightly rubbed at extremities. Joints a trifle worn, with spine ends slightly frayed. Front hinge cracked, but still tight. Rear hinge fine. Contents slightly age-toned and text block slightly sprung, but nothing loose. Overall, in good plus condition. Bound in original brown decorated cloth with gilt spine titles. About this Item: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston, 1885. Brown Pictorial Cloth. Condition: Good. First Edition. Yes, this 497 page First edition, being an increasingly well respected and energetically applauded offering it is proudly presented with great and well deserved hubris by Hirschfeld Galleries in the publishers ORIGINAL binding. Said binding being full brownish gray cloth with black pictorial on cover and gilt titling on spine. Book is solid and tight though it does have moderate corrner bumping and spine end fraying and a bit of a rub along the exterior of the front hinge. There uis also one pea-sized white stain on front cover. Internally excellent. Wonderful illustrations. frontis (port), plus 15 other plates from drwgs, plus text illus, 4 double page maps, index. A classic arctic voyage, reprinted in 1886. It contains a sketch of the voyage of the Jeannette, of which Melville was the chief engineer, the drift and loss of the ship in June 1881 in East Siberian Sea. The crew travelled by sledge and boat to the Siberian coast. Melville searched for De Long in the Lena River area. The book describes the country and the native peoples and includes a description of the 1884 expedition to relieve Greely's Lady Franklin Bay expedition and a proposed method to reach the North Pole.
