Soigneuse publication imprimée sur grand vélin filigrané, elle s'orne d'une lithographie originale en couverture ainsi que de 32 lithographies à pleine-page et de la décomposition de couleurs de la première affiche réalisée par Toulouse-Lautrec ; l'ensemble, tiré sur les presses des ateliers Mourlot. ''L?affiche connaît un large développement après la promulgation de la loi du 29juillet 1881qui consacre la « liberté de la Presse » et proclame le libre affichage. Jules Chéret, peintre et affichiste introduit et développe l?usage de la couleur dans la lithographie. En 1889il est l?auteur de l?affiche qui lance le bal du Moulin Rouge. La première affiche « Moulin-Rouge, la Goulue » commandée en 1891à Lautrec par Zidler, directeur du célèbre cabaret, est un succès. Elle incite Lautrec à s?engager dans la création d?affiches et plus largement de lithographies. Entre 1891et 1900, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec crée 31affiches et près de 325lithographies qui lui permettent de se faire connaître d?un plus large public. Lautrec, admiratif devant l?affiche « France-Champagne » conçue par Pierre Bonnard en 1891, se fait conduire par l?artiste chez l?imprimeur Ancourt. Le père Cotelle, l?un des ouvriers, l?aurait initié à la technique de la lithographie. Le peintre travaille aussi avec l?imprimerie Chaix qui, en 1881, a racheté les ateliers Jules Chéret. Dans ces ateliers, Toulouse-Lautrec a à sa disposition un personnel spécialisé. Il réalise lui-même la pierre de trait et les reports sur les pierres de couleur pour les petits formats à partir de ses dessins préparatoires au fusain et de ses cartons peints avec une peinture très diluée à l?essence. Les techniciens préparent les pierres, les encrent, reportent les dessins, veillent au calage et s?occupent du tirage pour les estampes de dimensions plus grandes. À partir de 1893, Lautrec renonce aux dessins préparatoires et compose directement sur la pierre. Il utilise le pinceau ou le crayon dans ses premières estampes et incorpore avec brio le crachis, projection d?encre produite au moyen d?une brosse à dents que l?on trempe dans l?encre lithographique.Chaque composition reflète son souci de lisibilité. Lautrec reprend les principes des estampes japonaises. Le dessin prime toujours: lignes ondoyantes ou tracés nerveux, premiers plans occupés par des silhouettes coupées arbitrairement et cernées d?un trait épais, figures planes et stylisées. Le traitement de la couleur transforme l?image en affiche: de larges aplats de couleurs pures et contrastées visant à attirer le regard des spectateurs. Il conçoit l?affiche comme un outil de communication: messages brefs et efficaces, parfois répétés pour frapper les esprits.Sa réflexion porte autant sur l?image que sur le lettrage, sa forme et sa disposition. Le succès d?une affiche tient dans le choc qu?elle crée, dans l?immédiateté de ce qu?elle donne à lire et à voir. Lautrec révolutionne la technique de l?affiche en y apportant fraîcheur et inventivité et préfigure l?art publicitaire contemporain. La plupart de ses lithographies ont été tirées à un petit nombre d?exemplaires: éditions allant de 12à 100épreuves pour lesquelles la presse à bras était utilisée. Maurice Joyant was Lautrec's boyhood friend and their relationship deepened over the course of their lifetimes. In 1891, Joyant became chief purchaser and director of the famous Paris art gallery of Boussod, Valadon et Cie, where he organized the first retrospective of Lautrec's work in 1893. In 1898 he staged a second exhibition, at the Goupil Gallery in London. Along with Italian printmaker Michele Manzi and art dealer Jean Boussod, Joyant formed a publishing house for original prints, including Lautrec. He was largely responsible for persuading Lautrec's mother, the Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec, to present her collection to the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec at Albi. Some age wear on binding with spine rubbed and creased, with moderate rubbing along edges. Half-title professionally repaired. Moderate age-toning along paper margin. Text in French.
