About this Item: Paris - Librarie des Amateurs, A Ferroud, 1917. Hardcover. Condition: NEAR FINE. A very scarce copy of Charles Baudelaires Les Fleurs du Mal. This is the fiftieth anniversary edition of this textfrom the Librarie des Amateurs series by A Ferroud. Illustrated throughout with numerous page header and footervignettes. With original hand coloured paper wraps bound in thisbook. With illustrations by George Antoine Rochegroose, a French historical and decorative painter and then wood-engraved by Barbant. Les Fleurs du Mal or The Flowers of Evil, is an entire volume of poetry by the eminentFrench author CharlesBaudelaire. It was first published in 1857 and a pioneering and important work inboth the symbolist and modernist movements. Thematically this poemdeals with decadence and eroticism. It issegregated thematically into six sections. Through this work Baudelaire conveys his ideas of the changing nature of beauty in a modern, industrialising, society. This particular work of Baudelaires has great significance due to its initial reception. Originally both the author and publisher were prosecuted as this work was viewed as an insult to public decency. Baudelaire was fined 300 francs from this prosecution. Charles Baudelaire was an eminentFrench poet of the nineteenth century. Most notably, Baudelaire is credited withcoining the term 'modernity' to designate the ephemeral, yet fleeting experience of life in an urban metropolis. Condition: In a half morocco binding from H Capelle, binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper. Externally, very smart with justsome veryminor bumping to the extremities. Remnants of prior owner's bookplate to recto of frontendpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges and clean throughout. Overall: NEAR FINE. Seller Inventory # 051028

About this Item: Revue des deux Mondes, 1855. Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. Seller Inventory # ABE-1491323680000
