About this Item: N.P.,, The Hague:, 1718. First Edition.. Collation: ?1,A-L8. Pagination: [2],176p. Contemp. sheep, banded spine, gilt, gilt title on red morocco label, rubbed. Illustrations: Engraved printer?s mark on t.p. Androl is only known from this sequel to the Gablais. ?There was a 1718 continuation entitled Les genies assistans. This 1718 text mostly seems to take issue with the Cathlicism of Villar?s La suite and also has little relation to the original Gabalis. Authorship of this 1718 text is disputed, but it may have been by Antoine Androl.? [Bonnie Latimer ?Alchemies of satire: A history of sylphs in The Rape of the Lock. In Review of Eng. Studies, 2006.]Villars, Nicholas Pierre Henri, Abbé de Mountfaucon's (1635-73) work is on demonology and the occult sciences of the Rosicrucians written in the style of a dialogue. It was an attack against such sciences and appealed to common sense. But Villars revealed the secrets of the Rosicrucians. "In spite of its satirical character The Count of Gabalis awoke an interest in the occult, so much so that it is believed by some that Villars intended to promote Paracelsian magic than to destroy it. Only a few years after the appearance of the book, however, its author was murdered by the Rosicrucians, it is said, to avenge his indiscretion and mockery. Citations: STCN 171808. Coumont M84.15.
