Guillaume, homme de guerre et diplomate fut nommé vice-roi du Piémont en 1537. Pierre Davantès le Jeune, fils de Jean, est né à Rabastens en Gascogne. Il est le frère de Pierre l'Aîné et son héritier universel en 1561. Il est signalé dans les sources genevoises comme marchand libraire en 1563, 1565 et 1568. En 1572, il demande à Gaspard de Hus d'acheter une grande quantité de livres à Henri II Estienne pour les vendre à la foire de Francfort. Une édition de 1572 avec l'adresse « A Basle, pour Pierre Davantes » a été imprimée à Caen. Deux éditions de 1573 « A La Rochelle, par Pierre Davantes » ont été imprimées à Genève par Jacob Stoer. Droz (Fausses adresses typographiques, dans Bibliothèque d'Humanisme et Renaissance, XXIII, 1961), cette édition de 1573, tout comme celle de 1571 (à l'adresse de Heildelberg, pour Jean Mareschal) aurait été composée à Genève chez J. Stoer. Celui-ci aurait acheté à Jean Mareschal en 1571 les 576 premières pages et aurait imprimé lui-même les pp. 577 à 1171, ainsi que les 8 premiers feuillets. Elle est partagée entre Abel L’Angelier(voir Balsamo et Simonin, Abel L’Angelier et Françoise de Louvain, n°68, page 171).Ces mémoires estimés, śuvre des trois frères Du Bellay, Guillaume, Martin et Jean, oncles de Joachim du Bellay, furent publiés pour la première fois en 1569 par René du Bellay, baron de La Lande (15 .-16.), gendre de Martin du Bellay. Ils sont les premiers à embrasser le règne de François Ier dans son entier, et sont très précieux pour l’étude de cette période. C’est Guillaume du Bellay, Seigneur de Langeais (1491-1543), à la fois diplomate et homme d'épée, vice-roi du Pièmont, qui entreprend cette histoire, composée à l'imitation des Décades de Tite-Live. Les trois premiers livres et le début du quatrième sont de lui. Martin du Bellay (1495-1559) complète l’ouvrage, de la fin du livre IV au livre X, mort de François Ier. Martin du Bellay, historien, habile négociateur, prince d’Yvetot et grand capitaine avait combattu auprès de son frère Guillaume à Novare, Marignan, Pavie puis en Provence et en Pièmont, campagnes dont il donne un récit précis et vivant. Il utilise abondamment la correspondance et les notes de Jean du Bellay, (1492-1560), le troisième frère, prélat humaniste, ami et protecteur de Rabelais.
