Item Description: Couverture rigide. Book Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-1511717122640

Item Description: Chez Déterville, 1800. Couverture rigide. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition of the translation and notes from St. Angelo, adorned with a frontispiece and fifteen figures from Picart engraved by Jourdan. Note that during the Revolution and again in 1800 the name of the author was shot in Desaintange. Full blond marbled calf contemporary. Back smooth decorated with jewels and gold boxes, spare capacity and volume numbers of red morocco. Gilded frame boards roulette. All slices speckled red. Caps head and tail leveled. Corners lightly bumped. Some spots. Good editing, extensive commentary by De Saint-Ange. Although the latter had talent, his translations were hardly appreciated in his time, probably because his poems did not receive the approval of his peers considered him a poser. Note that the translation of the Metamorphoses is to follow and many notes and quotes accompany the text. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Item Description: Paris Imprimerie Royale, 1676. First Edition of this Illustrated Edition OVID. [BENSERADE, Isaac de, translator]. Metamorphoses d’Ovide. En Rondeaux Imprimez et Enrichis de Figures Par Ordre De Sa Majesté, Et dediez å Monseigneur Le Dauphin. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1676. First Edition of this illustrated edition. Quarto (10 7/8 x 8 inches; 277 x 200 mm). [14], 463, [1, blank], [8, table] pp. With engraved frontispiece title-page by Sébastian Le Clerc after Charles Le Brun. Engraved royal arms on the title-page, two cherub vignettes and 226 engraved illustrations by Le Clerc, Chauveau and Le Pautre. These illustrations are considered to be some of the finest work of Chauveau and Le Clerc. Contemporary mottled calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine with black morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt. Gilt dentelles and board edges. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Outer hinges starting and a bit rubbed, but still strong. Board edges a bit bumped and rubbed. Some toning and mild staining throughout. Occasional worming to lower margin, mainly to signatures 3G-3I, not affecting text. Over all a very nice copy. Issac de Benserade was an important poet in the court of Louis XIV and was the librettist for the composer Lully. His translation of Métamorphoses d'Ovid in the form of a rondeaux was considered a failure and negatively affected his reputation. "Benserade wrote rondeaus upon Ovid some of which are reckoned tolerable but upon the whole the attempt was too absurd for serious approbation and his Ovid without occasioning any controversy dropt into oblivion almost as soon as it was published, although it appeared in a highly ornamented 4to printed at Paris 1676 with engravings to the expence [sic] of which the king contributed 10,000 livres." ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS FRENCH ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE 18TH CENTURY AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL ILLUSTRATED OVIDS EVER PRODUCED. This work includes the magnificent plates engraved for this superb edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses published by Le Mire and Basan 1767-1771, a book reverred during the great period of 18th century French illustration. The designs for this work were executed by a brilliant galaxy of artists such as Eisen, Boucher, Moreau, Le Prince, Monnet, and Choffard, and their designs were skillfully engraved by Le Mire and Basan. There is a significant biography of Ovid presented with this edition. The text is offered both in the Latin and in French. The romantic intersection is thus completed. Though most illustrated books published in France at this time fell into the rococo style, Ovid's stories begged a classical treatment, and indeed this book marked the transition from rococo to neo-classical style, the latter being best exemplified by Moreau (in his later work) and Fragonard. The poem is mainly a collection of Greek and Roman myths, retelling classical stories such as Echo and Narcissus, Jason and Medea, and Venus and Adonis. It also includes the Eastern Babylonian tale, Pyramus and Thisbe. This great epic work has been recognized throughout the centuries for its inventiveness, charm, and originality. "As a story-teller and guide to Greek myth and Roman legend, Ovid was very influential on later Roman writers and was read, quoted, and adapted during the Middle Ages. He was the favourite Latin poet of the Renaissance, and there were many translations of his works into English."-M.C.Howatson. His influence upon great writers through history, from Chaucer to Marlowe and Shakespeare, is well-known. Bookseller Inventory # 25584
