Item Description: The Limited Editions Club, 1938. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 5 hardcover volumes in slipcase. Black cloth with red labels on the spine. All 5 volumes are in very good condition, but I've rated the set as only Good condition because the slipcase is taped at all the edges with brittle tape. 5 volumes: Fantine, Cosette, Marius, Saint-Denis, Jean Valjean. About 300 pages per volumes. Translated by Lascelles Wraxall. A limited edition of 1,500 copies of which this is number 1,235. Signed on the limitation page by Lynd Ward. There is a small gold sticker on the inside back cover, Philip Duschenes Rare Books. The original subscriber's bookplate is on the inside front cover of each volume. Measures 7.75 x 11.25. Slipcase is black cloth over boards, but it is held together almost entirely by tape-reinfocement. These come from a single collection of more than 250 LEC books. Item Description: The Limited Editions Club,, New York:, 1938. Hardcover. Limited Edition.. All five volumes of this five volume set are small quartos measuring 10 1/2" by 7" in near fine or better conditions uniformly bound in black cloth covered boards with gilt stamped orange title labels on the spines. Without dust jackets as issued. Translated from the original French by Lascelles Wraxall and with an introduction by Andre Maurois. This set is one of only 1,500 copies printed with this set numbered 106 and signed by the illustrator, Lynd Ward. Illustrated throughout with wood cuts by Lynd Ward. Volume I is subtitled: Fantine; volume II is Cosette; volume III is Marius; Volume IV is Idlyl of the Rue Plumet; and volume V is Jean Valjean. Considered by many to be one of the one hundred greatest books ever written and believed to be Hugo's masterpiece against which few, if any, titles can compare. The genius of the author shines even through other mediums such as the movies and theatrical productions which have been based on the book. The first English translation appeared in London, followed closely by the American edition. When it was released in the U.S. it became an immediate best seller. It was often found in the saddlebags of officers from both the Federal and Confederate sides during the Civil War. It was the second most popular book of its age coming in after Uncle Tom's Cabin.
