Item Description: Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Ce, Bruxelles, 1862. Scarce first printing of this classic work of literature, published in Brussels on the 30th or 31st March 1862. The question of priority had been intensely debated in bibliographic circles for years. The findings of Michaux and Lacretelle definitively established primacy of this edition over the one distributed four or five days later in Paris by Pagnerre. The initial confusion stemmed from two sources: first was the prominent appearance of Pagnerre's name--and none other--in the French edition as a "Libraire-editeur," when in fact he was a distributing agent only; second was general acceptance of Vicaire's claim that Hugo corrected only from the proofs for the French edition. Michaux postulated that Hugo used the Belgian editions of his works as models for the Parisian printings. To ensure publication in France, Hugo was forced to amputate certain phrases from Les Miserables that would have offended the French censor. Lacretelle later confirmed Michaux's hypothesis. Large octavos, cotemporary calf, gilt decorated compartments to the spine, red and green morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With the bookplates of Witley Court. Witley Court in Worcestershire, England is an Italianate mansion that was built for the Foleys in the seventeenth century on the site of a former manor house, it was enormously expanded in the early nineteenth century by the architect John Nash. Subsequently sold to the Earls of Dudley, a second massive reconstruction by the architect Samuel Daukes took place in the mid nineteenth century, creating one of the great pleasure palaces of Victorian and Edwardian England and contained a large library. Volume IV is the First Paris Edition. The "Septieme" Edition" on the title page was spurious and meant to help boost sales. Rare and desirable with noted provenance. Victor Hugo's "great novel has been hailed as a masterpiece of popular literature, an epic poem in prose about God, humanity, and Hugo. Hugo hoped that Les Miserables would be one of if not the 'principal summits' of his body of works. Despite its length, complexity, and occasionally unbelievable plot and characterization, it remains a masterpiece of popular literature. It anticipates Balzac in its realism, but in its flights of imagination and lyricism, its theme of redemption, and its melding of myth and history, it is uniquely Hugo" (Dolbow, 149, 214). Charles E. Wilbour was hired by the Carleton Publishing Company to translate Hugo's grand masterpiece, and he did so very quickly, allowing the first American edition to be published within months of its French release. The intense advertising campaign waged by Carleton resulted in massive sales for Les Miserables, solidifying Hugo's epic in second place (behind only Uncle Tom's Cabin) in pre-Civil War American book sales. Item Description: A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Co., Brussels, 1862. First edition. VICTOR HUGO'S LES MISÉRABLES. IN THE VERY RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. 10 vols. octavo (235 × 150 mm.), pp. [11], 405, [1]; [7], 443, [1]; [9], 402; [7], 366; [9], 357, [3]; [7], 346; [9], 490; [7], 466, [2]; [9], 447, [1]; [7], 355, [1]. With an illustration in the text in vol. 4 and 2 pp. of publisher's advertisements at the end of vol. 5. In the original blue-grey printed wrappers. A few minor spots, stains and marginal tears. Wrappers slightly worn, chipped at edges, and stained; minor abrasions on the upper covers and spines of vols 5-7 with volume numbers in contemporary manuscript in ink; spines slightly darkened; a few minor old paper repairs; volume numbers in contemporary manuscript in blue chalk at the foot of each spine. A very good set. In two folding cloth archival boxes. FIRST EDITION of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, one of the great works of European literature, in the very rare original wrappers. With the original publisher's advertisement leaf announcing this as the first edition at the end of vol. 5. A remarkable survival, tall and uncut, with the wrappers very well preserved. THE TRUE FIRST EDITION The first edition, published in Brussels, appeared for sale on 31 March 1826; this was followed by an edition published by Pagnerre in Paris a few days later. The relative priority of these two editions was the subject of some debate, until, in 1930, Flavien Michaux definitively proved that the Brussels edition was first (see Michaux pp. 61-68, and Talvart & Place vol. 9 pp. 39-40). Hugo, working in exile in Guernsey, corrected the proofs of the Brussels edition, and the Brussels edition then served as the text on which the Paris edition was based. The publisher's advertisement leaf for Les Misérables at the end of vol. 5 (present in this copy) announces this as the first edition: "Seule édition originale et de propriété, imprimée avec grand soin sur beau papier cavalier in-8vo." The novel appeared in parts over successive months: 10 volumes in all, divided into five parts, each of two volumes, issued in blue-grey printed wrappers. In the present set volumes 1-6 and 10 have the title, part-title, volume numbers, and publisher's details printed on the wrappers. Volumes 7-9 have the title and publishers's details only printed on the wrappers, with the volume numbers partially written out in ink in a contemporary hand. It is not clear why the wrappers of these two volumes vary from those of the other volumes: they must either have been issued like this, or they are a variant form. Certainly all the volumes are bound as issued. So far there has been no analysis of the first edition bindings of Les Misérables, but this is perhaps understandable given that so few examples in wrappers appear to have survived. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone. PROVENANCE: (1) Small early private library stamp in the upper margin of the upper wrapper, vol. 1. (2) Two contemporary annotations in ink noting errors in the text regarding military equipment. LITERATURE: Michaux, F. Essais Bibliographiques. Paris, 1930. Talvart, H. & Place, J. Bibliographie des auteurs modernes de langue française. Paris, 1935. Michaux pp. 61-68. Talvart & Place IX 59. Copies in the original wrappers are very rare on the market. ABPC (1975-2015) records only two examples at auction. The last copy in wrappers at auction that we can trace sold for 36,000 euros (Godts, 11/12/2012, wrappers chipped in places). Item Description: New York: Carleton, 1862. First Edition in English. The first edition in English of Hugo's magisterial work, published in five volumes. The biography by his wife Adele Hugo, was issued in 1863 as a companion volume, because -- as the publisher's note observes -- "the Great Romance is a part of the life of Victor Hugo and cannot be fully understood without it." All six volumes are translated by Charles Edwin Wilbour. Although uniform in design, the volumes are bound in different colors -- nineteenth-century publishers were generally haphazard about such matters. Volumes I and II are in terracotta cloth, volume III is in green, volumes IV and V are in dark brown. The life of Hugo is in light brown cloth. The condition of volumes I to IV is generally very good or better, with some wear especially to the corners. Volume V is in lesser condition, with surface wear to the cloth, and loss to the front gutter. The faults of Volume V are mitigated by its extraordinary provenance: the book bears an inscription on the front free endpaper from Union cavalry commander Colonel George Eliphaz Spencer (1836-1893) to his wife, Bella Z. Spencer (1840-1867), who appended her ownership signature to the first blank. Mrs. Spencer was the author of TRIED AND TRUE, OR, LOVE AND LOYALTY, A STORY OF THE GREAT REBELLION (1866), and other works based on her experiences as a soldier's wife. Her first book was inspired by meeting Southern refugees while accompanying her husband on campaigns in Tennessee and Alabama, at Paducah and the battle of Shiloh. As she wrote, "Sickness, want, even starvation came upon [the Refugees], when the hand of humanity was withheld. They were compelled to leave their homes, and wander friendless through the land." One imagines that Jean Valjean's struggles to maintain his humanity in a brutal and violent world must have held a special resonance for those who, like the Spencers, read Hugo amid the devastation of the Civil War. In all, a very appealing set of this literary and cultural landmark. Bookseller Inventory # 17673

Item Description: Brussels: A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Ce, 1862, 1862. 10 volumes, octavo (226 × 138 mm). Contemporary or near-contemporary black calico cloth, printed paper spine-labels. Rubbed, a very good set. First edition, the great photographer Julia Margaret Cameron's copy, with her ownership inscription dated October 1863 at the head of the title page of Vol. I. A further pencilled marginalia in her hand on page 57 records "Oct. 16th, Olympe Boyer", perhaps relating to its acquisition. A fascinating association copy, reflecting a mutual admiration between Cameron and Hugo. The date is two months before Julia Margaret Cameron received her first camera, a gift from her daughter and son-in-law: "It may amuse you, Mother, to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater." Cameron was then 48 years old, a mother of six, and a deeply religious, well-read, somewhat eccentric friend of many of Victorian England's greatest minds, living on the Isle of Wight, in a house in Freshwater called Dimbola, after one of her husband's estates in Ceylon. She was well versed in French, her mother, Adeline de l'Étang, having come from a family of French aristocrats. She had an informal and unconventional education, chiefly with her French grandmother in Versailles. At the time of her acquisition of this copy, Victor Hugo was living in the Channel Islands, enduring a long 19-year exile. He moved to Guernsey where he acquired Hauteville House in 1856. Les Misérables was completed there. Knowing Hugo's interest in photography, Julia Margaret Cameron delivered 29 portraits to him at Hauteville House in the late 1860s and early 1870s. "No one has ever captured the rays of the sun and used them as you have," he wrote. "I throw myself at your feet". Later title pages in this copy have the undated ownership inscriptions of Julia Margaret Camerson's youngest son Hardinge Hay Cameron (1846–1911) and all volumes have the family surname added in manuscript along the fore edges. Julia Margaret Cameron died in January 1879 in Ceylon, where Hardinge was with the Ceylon Civil Service, and it seems likely that he added his name to the set after her death. He may have commissioned the binding, which has the appearance of bindings from the Indian subcontinent of that period. The title pages have their respective volume-numbers pencilled in English, perhaps a necessary instruction to binders not familiar with the French language of the original. The Brussels edition of Les Misérables has precedence as the first, as the first two volumes were published in Brussels on 30 or 31 March 1862, preceding the Paris edition by four or five days. The remaining volumes appeared on 15 May 1862. Bookseller Inventory # 110931

Item Description: A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, 1862. Couverture rigide. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition published a few days before that of Paris, without edition statement. It differs somewhat from the Paris edition, including its pages in black titles, and tables established 5 parts, detailing two volumes, which can guide the bookbinder here as to link all 5 books and not ten. Binders half morocco chocolate contemporary. Back to 4 nerves decorated with wheels and tail head, double gold thread on the nerves, and blind fillets between nerves. Slight traces of friction. A scratch the last box of volume 3-4. rubbed flat. Brunissures scattered, especially at the beginning of each volume and more rare on the whole. Beautiful copy in half morocco contemporary.
