Item Description: Thomas Jolly, & Simon Benard, rue st. Jacques, Paris, 1670. Full Calf Leather. Book Condition: Good. 2 volumes. Contemporary (original) 17th century full calf leather binding with raised bands and elaborate gilt compartments on spine. Spines have chips at the top & bottom and there is moderate to heavy wear but still very presentable -- especially for the age. Decorative gold rolled edges to the cover has been mostly worn away. Volume 1: [xxii] + 420 + [78] notes and indexes. Volume 2: This book mispaginated. [1-8] + 9-72 + 83-445 + [45] notes and indexes. Both volumes have been collated and are complete Nicolas Perrot d' Ablancourt (April 5 1606 in the Châlon-on-Marne - November 17 1664 in Paris) was a French translator. A malicious remark on one of his translations spawned the saying "les belles infidèles (the beautiful inaccurate ones)." Some of Nicolas Perrot d'Ablancourt's works are still being repinted today. Great gift item for someone who reads French and loves Roman history. Publius (or Gaius) Cornelius Tacitus (c. 56 – c. 117) is one of the important historians of Roman Antiquity. The surviving portions of his two major works—the Annals and the Histories—treat the reigns of the Roman Emperors Tiberius, Claudius, Nero and those that reigned in the Year of the Four Emperors. These two works span the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus in 14 to (presumably) the death of emperor Domitian in 96. There are significant lacunae in the surviving texts. Other surviving works by Tacitus treat Oratory (in dialogue format, see Dialogus de oratoribus), Germania (in De origine et situ Germanorum), and biographical notes about his father-in-law Agricola, primarily during his campaign in Britannia (see De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae). Tacitus' style in his major works is Annalistic. An author living in the latter part of the Silver Age of Latin literature, his writing is characterised by an uncompromising boldness and sharpness of wit, and a compact and sometimes unconventional use of the Latin language.
