Item Description: Amsterdam, Chez Jean Frederic Bernard, 1730. Elephant folio. Later light brown hcalf w. six raised bands on back. Red and black title-labels and gilt ornamentation to back. Top-edge trimmed, otherwise uncut. First leaves w. a bit of soiling, occasional scattered brownspotting. T-p. mounted. Engr. title-vignette, large engr. vignette at end of text (p. 84). (4) (half-title and title-page), 84 pp., 47 leaves, four of which w. three and 43 of which w. four beautiful engravings of insects and their plants on each, in all 184 engr. illustrations, all in very clear impressions, mostly measuring about 15 x 11 cm. but the last 30 mostly about 21 x 15 cm. each. (All illustrations are numbered; Nr. I and LI both have a No. 1 and 2, but there are (and is not supposed to be) no illustrations numbered CLXX (170) and CLXXII (172), -the two vignettes probably hold the place of these, thus we get two engr. vignettes and 184 engr. illustr. in all). All plates are in excellent condition w. virtually no brownspotting or soiling. Copy w. wide margins. Rare and extraordinarily beautiful work. First folio-edition in French (same year and place as the first folio-edition in Dutch), first French edition. Originally this work was published as "Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung and sonderbare Blumennahrung" in Nuremberg in 1679 - 83 in 4to with 100 plates; later it was published as "Die rupsen Begin, voedsel, en wonderbare verandering" in Amsterdam in 1713-17, also in quarto w. 150 plates. In 1718 it became "Erucarum Ortus, alimentum et paradoxa metamorphosis", also a 4to printed in Amsterdan with 150 plates. In 1730 it was issued for the first time as an augmented folio-edition with 184 engr. illustrations in French and in Dutch, both printed in Amsterdam; the illustrations are the same as those of the original, but this edition also contains new ones. In 1771 it became part of the "Histoire générale des insectes de Surinam et de toute l'Europe" in three volumes.Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 - 1717) was born in Germany by a Dutch mother. Already as a child she was fascinated by insects; this fascination grew into a passionate interest in especially the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies and moths. Early on she drew these insects as well as the plants on which they nourish. All aspects of them were thus depicted by her, i.e. also all the stages from egg (over caterpillar and pupa) to full-grown insects. Prior to Maria Merian, describers and illustrators of insects were only concentrating on identifying the species and she is the first to also depict the plants they feed on. After having seen a collection of insects and caterpillars from Surinam (Guiana), Merian decided to go there, and thus sailed off to South America with her youngest daughter, who later helped her with her illustrations. From the rainforest numerous species were collected; she fed the caterpillars and continually sketched them, achieving an immense insight into the development of the insects, -this behaviour also resulted in her being considered somewhat of an eccentric. After 21 months (1701) she returned to Europe taking all specimens with her. Her illustrations were turned into her very famous work on the transformation of Surinam insects ("Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium"), which was published in Amsterdam in 1705. In the present work she has continued her development and gained knowledge of the insects, focusing again on European insects."Merian was the first author to associate insects with their host plants." (Desmond, Great Natural History Books and their Creators, 2003, p. 28). She was highly influenced by the excellent and precise paintings produced by the Dutch school of flower painters at the time, whose works were based mainly on meticulous observation as well as precision; the flowers "accessorizing" her insects are very accurate. She was the very first to paint plants in their natural surroundings. "Though Maria Merian's first concern is with the inse. Bookseller Inventory # 28870
