Item Description: London, Colburn, 1823. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 vols, xvi, 311, xi, 316 p., uncut, original boards, firm and well sewn, minor nicks and splits in paper of hinges, head of one spine rather obtrusively repaired with strip of brown paper (35 mm) - room for improvement - labels a little darkened as to be expected but completely intact First edition of a literary hoax, a pseudo-translation by Coventry Patmore's father, acquitted of murder, one of the London Magazine group, friend of Lamb, the recipient of Hazlitt's letters which he collected as Liber Amoris. Besides the spoof on the current fashion for usually superficial books by tourists about each others' countries. about half of vol.II is devoted to the current literary scene. The veil of anonymity allows more freedom in criticising his contemporaries. This copy was from the Grand-Ducal library at Oldenburg, with the neat stamp on title of a crowned 'P.v.H.', sc. Herzog Peter von Holstein: did he know it was a spoof, I wonder?. Bookseller Inventory # 27055
