About this Item: Privately published by the compiler, London, first edition, 1953, 1953. Printed wrappers, 8vo, 212 x 136 mm, 52 pp. 153 entries. The only Belloc bibliography. The book was also praised in a review by the eminent bibliographer Philip Gaskell as an advance in the bibliographical treatment of modern books: "Mr Cahill's chronological catalogue of Hilaire Belloc's English first editions is a most distinguished essay in contemporary bibliography. The chief problem confronting the cataloguer of modern books is that of deciding how far he can usefullv adapt to books printed on many different types of power-press the principles of bibliographical description that have been evolved to deal with books printed bv hand; and Mr Cahill has gone far towards finding a solution. The Greg-Bowers formulary, though admirably suited to the description of books printed in the eighteenth century and before, is simply misleading when applied to those of more recent date. With this catalogue, Mr Cahill has done a real service to students of Belloc; and he has done it without any unnecessary display of bibliographical technique. " Wrappers a little darkened and slightly soiled, Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-07638

About this Item: On letterhead of the Reform Club Pall Mall. 22 June, 1925. 1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter carries a few autograph emendations and postscript. With envelope addressed to Mrs Strutt at 12 Somers Place, London. Belloc was an accomplished travel writer, and had published his classic book 'The Pyrenees' in 1903. He writes that he is giving her 'two addresses', 'only in each case you must write to the people before going there and the sooner the better, because the Season in these high places is very short'. (He adds in autograph 'Up to, say, Sept 30'.) 'Each has a great torrent, each is quite small and comfortable and clean and cheap (ask prices before you go) But of the two Gabas is the best [s]uited to English people because it has ample woods around it and much larger mountains, and is right off the railway.' He describes the two addresses in some detail, with such comments as 'Personally I prefer to break the journey in two nights' and 'There is a gap of two miles for which you will have to hire a vehicle across the Spanish frontier.' Of one journey he writes: 'Whatever you do don't stop at Dax on the way.', adding in autograph 'It is detestable.' Mrs Strutt was a leading member of London Roman Catholic high society. About this Item: 13 October . On letterhead of The Oratory Edgbaston Birmingham., 1886. 12mo, 6 pp. Bifolium and single leaf. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged and lightly-creased paper. Closely and neatly written. An important and revealing letter, written while Belloc was still at school. Belloc's biographer Joseph Pearce, describes his 'infatuation' with his first love Mina Hope, 'the centre of his universe [.] more important than France, whereas England was merely "the country of Minna" [phrase quoted from a Belloc letter of 1887]' Towards the beginning of the letter he writes 'Now first of all as to what you say of my being down rather, with the idea that a change in your behaviour towards me had also been a change in friendship, you were right, only you see I naturally thought so, because there had been a long break of a year between your letters and we had not met for two years. But what you say in your letter makes me a bit sad, because, you know, if what you say of your difficulty in expressing a thing to me is true it makes it a little lonely for me'. States that 'at home things are not very bright [.] I made one friend only I lost a great deal when I found that something whether of my morbidness or selfishness or whatever it was had prevented any real friendship between us [.] I did not choose my friends, my mind has found them and will hold to them and having but two, one was enough to lose.' He is 'puzzled' when she says 'that such an indifference as you feel is a think you were aiming for and yet you hope that I will not have the same experience'. His view is that 'Perhaps after all a seeming apathy and indifference is nothing more than the change from morbidness to a healthier state and when one finds that one dosn't [sic] mope any more one feels the least bit sorry; it is not that ones thoughts are less strong or of less importance but that they are less turned on self and more wholesome: I say it in all fear and trembling, as it has happened to me.' In the latter part of the letter describes how 'at home matters had come to a scarcely endurable crisis', and he 'had the happiness to be batterried [sic] and assaulted by a worthy boy who has four inches in his favour but no guard; when we stopped he was the most sorry'.
