Hardcover. 12mo, 12.5 cm, bound in contemporary calf with gilt decorated borders, spine with titling piece, gilt decoration, raised bands, marbled endpapers, tan page edges. Two volumes in one. I: pp [4], vi, (7)-167, [1] + engraved title with portrait after letterpress title. II: pp 153, [5] + engraved title with illustration after letterpress title. Spine a little darkened, lightly rubbed at joints, with short crack at top of front joint but still firm; engraved titles heavily foxed, with lesswr foxing to adjacent leaves; old pencil ownership name at front of J.W. Simpson (of an old Newmarket, Ontario, family). Fine copy otherwise. Lady Russell's second husband, William Russell, 6th Earl of Bedford, was involved in the Rye House Plot and was subsequently beheaded. During her long life she was an avid letter writer, despite her lack of much education. They were first published in 1773. Contains her letters to and from Dr Fitzwilliam, one to Charles II, to and from John Tillotson (Archbishop of Canterbury), two to Queen Mary, and others to and from various nobles. 158 letters in all.
