Item Description: C.A. Hinkley, New York, 1824. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Vol. 1 only. xix, [1], 405 p.; 15 cm. Contemporary tree calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Chesterfield's Letters. Blank leaf following front endpapers inscribed, in two different hands: "? S? Buchanan" and "Jane B. Lane 1828." The latter inscription also appears at the head of the title page. Jane Buchanan Lane (1793-1839), sister of President James Buchanan, married Eliot Tole Lane in 1813 in Mercerburg, Pa. Her daughter Harriet Lane Johnston (1830-1903) served as first lady during Buchanan's presidency from 1857-1861. In Good Condition: front joint split but board is attached; minor loss at tail of spine; edges rubbed; final page of text (p. 405) and back free endpaper are detached but present; foxing throughout but otherwise clean.
