Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Drawn by some sympathetic note in his poems, young people often wrote to Rilke with their problems and hopes. From 1903 to 1908 Rilke wrote a series of remarkable responses to a young would-be poet, on poetry and on surviving as a sensitive observer in a harsh world. Accompanying the letters is a chronicle of Rilke's life showing what he was experiencing in his own relationship to life and work when he wrote these letters. Rilke's timeless letters about poetry, sensitive observation, and the complicated workings of the human heart. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet are arguably the most famous and beloved letters of the twentieth century. Written when the poet was himself still a young man, with most of his greatest work before him, they were addressed to a student who had sent Rilke some of his own writing, asking for advice on becoming a writer. The two never met, but over a period of several years Rilke wrote him these ten letters, which have been cherished by hundreds of thousands of readers for what Stephen Mitchell calls in his Foreword the "vibrant and deeply felt experience of life" that informs them. Eloquent and personal, Rilke's meditations on the creative process, the nature of love, the wisdom of children, and the importance of solitude offer a wealth of spiritual and practical guidance for anyone. At the same time, this collection, in Stephen Mitchell's definitive translation, reveals the thoughts and feelings of one of the greatest poets and most distinctive sensibilities of the twentieth century. Letters written when the poet was himself still a young man, with most of his greatest work before him, they were addressed to a student who had sent Rilke some of his own writing, asking for advice on becoming a writer. A lightly worn copy attractively bound in finely woven cinnamon cloth and stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and on the spine which is slightly sun-faded. There is some light foxing to the top edge of the front boards which are also dulled, especially along the spine gutter. With scattered light soiling along the bottom of the front panel. A very good copy overall; very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. With the signature of "Johh H. Gardner" on the half-title page. A rather scarce first edition of this iconic work, a collection of ten letters published posthumously as Letters to a Young Poet. Unaccountably scarce. René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 29 December 1926), shortened to Rainer Maria Rilke), was an Austrian poet and novelist. Acclaimed as an idiosyncratic and expressive poet, he is widely recognized as a significant writer in the German language.[1] His work is viewed by critics and scholars as possessing undertones of mysticism, exploring themes of subjective experience and disbelief.[2][3][4] His writings include one novel, several collections of poetry and several volumes of correspondence.Rilke traveled extensively throughout Europe, finally settling in Switzerland, the inspiration for many of his poems. While Rilke is best known for his contributions to German literature, he also wrote in French. Among English-language readers, his best-known works include two poetry collections: Duino Elegies (Duineser Elegien) and Sonnets to Orpheus (Die Sonette an Orpheus), a semi-autobiographical novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge), and a collection of ten letters published posthumously Letters to a Young Poet (Briefe an einen jungen Dichter). In the later 20th century, his work found new audiences in citations by self-help authors[5][6][7] and frequent quotations in television shows, books and motion pictures.
