Item Description: Swan Sonnenschein, London, 1887. Blue Printed Cloth. Book Condition: VG. 1st thus. xx+110+(2, pub.list and notice); faint browning to outer sides of endpapers otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked in clean covers with very slight bumping to spine ends and corners. An occasional short eraseable pencil marginal line may remain but I think I got nearly all. Apparently quite scarce. The full ext of Levana had been translated into English several times but Wood argues that his 'highly metaphorical style makes heavy demands' even on German reader's attention and that it has been 'somewhat neglected' ; the present text is a selection of 'some of the pregnant sayings' threaded together to 'exhibit the current of the author's ideas, whilst avoiding his numerous digressions'. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Size: 13 Cms x 19 Cms. Bookseller Inventory # 007324

Item Description: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, London, 1848. Full Leather. Book Condition: Good. First British Edition. Here first translated from the original German and bound in full maroon leather with gilt titling on spine and marbled endpapers. Comprises title-page plus xx prelim. pages and 487 pages of text. Tail of spine is chipped with slight loss. The leather on the hinge of the front board has a two-inch split, running down from the top of the spine, and two inches running up from the bottom; the rear hinge has a half-inch split running up from the foot of the spine. Despite these splits, the boards are still firmly attached by the cords and endpapers. The binding is generally a bit scuffed and worn and the front board has become a bit bowed, while the edges of the page block are a bit stained and darkened with age. The text is clean and overall the condition of the book is reasonable - it represents a good reading copy. The author was a much admired German romantic novelist, who was born in modest rural surroundings. His novels were mainly about the village and family life he knew. They were also humerous and idealistic and he was very popular in his day. About this book on education, the author says in his preface: "At least this book has been composed with warmest love for the little beings, the delicate flower gods, of a soon fading Eden. May Levana, the motherly goddess who was formerly entreated to give a father's heart to fathers, hear the prayer which the title of this book addresses to her, and, in so doing, justify both it and this." Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 000919
