Item Description: Per Sebastianum Henricpetri [colophon: 1594], Basileae, 1594. Early in the Renaissance Aldus, Erasmus, and others demonstrated the importance of mastering Greek and working with Greek manuscripts. Grammars and dictionaries were the starting points for the task. Scapula (ca. 1540?ca. 1600), a professor of Greek. He assisted Henri Estienne with the compilation and production of Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae and then practically sent Estienne to the poorhouse by bringing out his one-volume abridgment. This edition self-proclaims itself to be "Editio ultima, priori locupletior & correctior." Provenance: Ownership inscriptions on the title-page of Johannes Narzius dated 1649; of Christopher Distingen dated 1674, and Georg Frieder dated 1711. Rubber stamps of an American Redemptorist library. Folio extra (35.5 cm; 13.75"). [11 (of 12)] ff., 1856 cols., [62] ff., 188 cols., [1] f. VD16 ZV13747. Contemporary alum-tawed pigskin over wood boards with bevelled edges, remnants of metal clasps, covers richly blind embossed using rolls with religious imagery (Crucifixion, saints, etc.); covers and boards heavily wormed with pinhole type worming extending into text. Title-page tattered at the edges; lacks the first leaf of Scapula's preface, that leaf replaced with an unrelated engraving. A decent, solid, though minorly defective copy. Item Description: Tip. Henri Stephani Parisiensis. S.l. (Ginebra),1557, 1557. . 18 cm. [16], 200 pág. [Sigue:] Id. IN M. T. CICERONIS QUA[M] PLURIMOS LOCOS CASTIGATIONES. Bookseller Inventory # 57028

Item Description: Anno M.D.LXXVII. Excudebat Henr. Stephanus. Geneva, 1577. Three works in one volume, 8vo, pp. [xvi], '11' [=111], [1], 200; [vi], 114; [iv], 228; each title page with Estienne device; Greek and Roman types; contemporary vellum, spine and lower edge lettered in ink by the same early hand (spine a little darkened). First edition of three interesting Ciceronian works by the great scholar-printer Henri Estienne. The first item, the Lexicon Graecolatinum, is a dictionary of words and idioms borrowed from the Greek by Cicero, and translated by him in his writings. A most interesting feature of this work is the preface, in which Henri reminds the reader of his father Robert's importance in contemporary scholarship, focusing particularly on the great Greek Thesaurus which is soon to appear. This lexicon is Henri Estienne's first original work. The second work is a collection of 'castigationes' (comments and corrections) to the received text of Cicero by Henri himself, derived partly from an old manuscript, and partly from his own scholarly deductions. This work was issued at the same time as the first work, but they are two distinct books and are not always found together. The last work, dating from some 20 years later, and again the work of Henri Estienne, is an attack on the Ciceronians who slavishly follow their hero, even when the text is a mass of error and corruption. Cast in the form of a dialogue and dedicated to the Hungarian humanist János Zsámboki (Joannes Sambucus, 1531-84), the book selects various passages from Cicero and demonstrates the mutability of their texts. Renouard 116/4 (both the first two items together) and 144-5/2; Schreiber 143 ('very rare'), 144 and 199. Bookseller Inventory # 12489
