Item Description: Privately Printed (J. Edward and Marlene Cornelius), Berkeley, CA, 2000. First Edition. Softcover. Quarto. viii + 212pp. Original printed wrappers. Edition limited to 156 copies. One of the most important issues of this valuable journal of Thelemic scholarship. A detailed (and sometimes controversial and sometimes humorous!) study and examination of Crowley's "Book of the Law." The author J. Edward Cornelius, (Frater Achad Osher 583) was born in Connecticut in 1951. He has been a student of Crowley's works since the late 1960s and after initiating a correspondence with Grady Louis McMurtry ( Frater Hymenaeus Alpha 777: 1918-1985 ), then head of the Ordo Templi Orientis, joined that Order. He is a prolific writer, publisher, and lecture on magical subjects, and was editor of the highly-regarded journal Red Flame. Very lightest of chafing to edges, spine slightly faded and with a hint of bruising at the head and tail, - otherwise a tight clean VG+ copy. One of the most sought-after issues in unusually good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 55520

Item Description: Privately issued: The O.T.O. / Church of Thelema 1938 [1942], Pasadena, 1938. First U.S. Edition. Softcover, small octavo (5 x 6 1/2 inches) 50pp. (+ 6pp adverts at rear) Booklet stapled in gilt-stamped blue wrappers, with "THE BOOK / OF THE LAW" and a small A.: A.: sigil gilt stamped on upper wrapper. The First U.S. Edition of "The Book of the Law." The edition was prepared by W.T. Smith directly from the British edition of 1938, with the exception that it omits the final three leave of notices and advertisements, and replaces them with a two page notice headed simply "O.T.O." made up of material about the Order extracted from "The Equinox." As a consequence of this change Smith also dropped the passage "See the announcement at the end of this volume" which was the last line of Part I of the Introduction as it referred to the proclamation of the publication of "The Equinox of the Gods" which was amongst the omitted advertisements. According to Smith's biographer, Martin P. Starr, the reset text was carefully checked, but in a typical case of overlooking the obvious, it was forgotten to replace the original publication date on the title page (1938) with the intended publication date October 31, 1942. The title page is otherwise identical to that of the 1938 edition, with the exception that the lines "BCM/ANKH / 188, High Holborn, London, W.C.1. / Price One Shilling net" have been replaced with "Issued by the [italics]/ CHURCH OF THELEMA / 1003 S. Orange Grove Ave. / PASADENA, CALIF." In the process of proof-reading Smith also corrected a number of errors that had slipped into the text of the 1938 edition, notably changing AL I:26 "Who and I" to "Who am I," AL I:32 "tongue and heart" to "heart and tongue," AL I:33 "Write unto us the ordeal," to "Write unto us the ordeals" and AL III:19 "to you at 718" to "to you as 718." Smith also removed Crowley's printed imprimatur of the elevenfold cross and Baphomet signature from the page facing the title page, leaving it blank save for the O.T.O. dove and chalice lamen, and in what was presumably a deliberate acknowledgement of wartime sensitivities, omitted the words "Democracy Dodders" which had been the very first sentence of the fifth part of the Introduction. All considered it was an important and handsome production, and is one of the few Thelemic publications prepared by a follower of which Crowley is known to have approved. A very small mark across the bottom of the rear wrapper, otherwise a Fine copy - as close to new as it would be possible to get in a book of this age. Bookseller Inventory # 54075
