With some contemporary annotations to outer margins in old ink. Top slightly trimmed, with minor wear, lower edge with dampstains and wear to corners, very minor worm trail to inner margin, overall no affect to text or wooducts, still a nice leaf and suitable for framing. The Nuremberg Chronicle is the most extensively illustrated book, and one of the most important, of the 15th century. The text is a universal history of the Christian world from the beginning of time to the 1490?s. Written in Latin by physician and humanist, Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) on commission from Nuremberg merchants Sebald Schreye (1446-1520) and Sebastian Kammermeister (1446-1503). The Chronicle was printed by Nuremberg printer Anton Koberger (c.1440-1513), owner of the largest 15th-century German printing house. The Latin edition was printed in Koberger?s shop between May 1492 and October 1493. In the meantime, a German translation was commissioned to George Alt (c.1450-1510), a scribe at the Nuremberg treasury, and the German edition was printed alongside the Latin one between January and December 1493. This work by Schedel [1440-1514] is an illustrated world history which is based on the Bible, which follows the story of human history related in the Bible and includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel it appeared in 1493. It is a well documented incunabulum, one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text.This epic history divides human history into 7 ages. Published and printed by Anton Koberger, the godfather of Albrecht Durer and the most successful German publisher of his day. The woodcut illustrations were made in the workshop of Michael Wolgemut [1434 - 1519], with an unpredcedented number of 1,809 illustrations. These woodblocks include views of cities and towns, battles, kings, and saints. Some images represent actual cities, and other images are purely imaginative.This print describes martyrs Policarpus, Praxedes, Felicitas, astronomer Ptolemy, grammarian Aulus Gellius, and heretics Montanus and Apelles and includes 7 small images. The verso describes the Popes Anicetus, Soter, Eleutherius, Victor, Zephyrinus, Calixtus from Year of Christ 174 through 222 with 6 small images.
