Liber psalmorum Davidis Regis, et prophetae. Ex

About this Item: ex Typographia Sauariana, Romae, 1614. 4to, pp. [8], 474, [3]; parallel text in double column (Arabic and Latin); woodcut coat-of-arms on title-p., woodcut printer's device on the antepenultimate leaf; contemporary ink marginalia on the first two leaves of the text; contemporary full vellum, manuscript titling on spine, yapp edges, page edges stained blue; the last 75 leaves with rodent nibblings in the fore-margin extending into the leaf approximately 3/8 of an inch but never approaching any text; the vellum also neatly restored at the fore-margin; 19th century bookplate of Dr. Grauff, and the bookseller's ticket of S. Wolf, Antiquare, Heidelberg. Contained in a brown cloth clamshell box, leather label on spine. "In a recent study Duverdier has shown how Savary de Breves, Ambassador of France in Constantinople from 1584 to 1606, in a crusading spirit conceived the idea of an Oriental press, so that, with the printing of religious works in Syriac and Arabic, the Christian minorities in the Levant would be better prepared to understand and accept the Roman church when their political liberation was near. He has Arabic and Syriac type cut during his stay in Rome (1608-1614) with which first Bellarmin's Catechism in Arabic was published in 1613. An Arabic Psalter was begun at the same time and published a year later . The Arabic typeface for this edition was probably cut by Sottile or another Italian craftsman, and is closely modeled after a Vatical manuscript of the Psalter" (Smitskamp). About this Item: Savary de Brèves Rome 1614, 1614. In-4°, (6ff), 474 pages, (1 f). Seller Inventory # 100073

LIBER PSALMORUM DAVIDIS REGIS ET PROPHETAE, Ex: DAVID, [Victorio SCIALAC

About this Item: Savary de Brèves (excudebat Stephanus Paulinus), Superiorum permissu, ex typographia Savariana, Romae, MDCXIV (1614), 1614. Couverture rigide. About this Item: Rome, Stefano Paolini f. Typographia Savariana, 1614., 1614. 4to. (8), 474, (6) pp. With two woodcut coats of arms on t. p. and at the end. Late 19th century half calf. First edition of this adaptation of the Psalms, set in Arabic-Latin parallel text. Printed in some 3000 copies, most of which were used for a 1619 re-issue with only the title page changed. Famous for the clarity and elegance of the typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Balagna, L’imprimerie arabe en occident, p. 55f.); as it occasionally departs from the Vulgate (as does the translation by the Maronites Sionita and Scialac), an extensive imprimatur was necessary. - Bellarmin's Arabic catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana in Rome; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - From the library of the Biblical scholar Samuel Davidson (1806-98) with his ms. ownership to title page; binding slightly bumped, but a fine copy altogether. STC 108. Darlow/Moule 1641. Lüthi 198. Smitskamp 33. Schnurrer 324 & p. 500-506. Fück 56. Ebert 18088. Brunet IV, 921. Seller Inventory # 33412

About this Item: Paris, [A. Vitré], 1625., 1625. 4to. (24), 315, (12) pp. With two printer's devices in prelims. (Bound with) II: [Barhebraeus, Gregorius]. Veteris philosophi Syri de sapientia divina. Poema aenigmaticum. Ibid., 1628. 4 ff. (incl. final blank), 35, (1) pp. With printer's device to t. p. Calf binding (c. 1800), covers and spine gilt, leading edges and inner dentelle gilt. First complete edition of the Psalter in Syriac. "The text, which includes Ps. CLI, is based on three manuscripts, one of which had been sent to the editor by George, the Maronite Archbishop of Nicosia. The Latin version professes to be as literal a translation as possible of the Syriac text" (Darlow/M.). The present Paris edition and the one published at Leiden in the same year by Erpenius are the first two European editions of the Psalter in the Syriac language. While both are printed in Syriac and Latin, Erpenius's edition omits psalm 151 (cf. Smitskamp 80). Edited by the Maronite Gabriel Sionita (1577-1648), principally involved in the 1645 Paris polyglot Bible, printed with the types of Savary de Brèves. - Bound with the sole edition of Barhebraeus's Syriac poem. Even library catalogues frequently fail to identify the author (or cite the editor Sionita). - Catalogue clipping mounted on front endpaper. Psalter title has ms. ownership and several stamps. Title of Barhebraeus stamped; all edges remargined to page dimensions of Psalter. Of the utmost rarity, only a single, incomplete copy at auction within the last decade (Sotheby's, Dec 7, 1993, lot 315, lacking 6 prelim. leaves). I: Goldsmith B 848.
