Hardcover. 4 vols. Each one has marbled paper baords and leather spine. Vols. 2-3 match bindings. Vols. 1 & 4 differ in style. 2406 pp. total, 26 BW engravins, though 2 are repeated from vol. 1 to vol. 2. An early British monthly arts periodical published by M. Arnold. Vol. 1: Feb-July 1831, 2 engravings; Vol. 2: Aug-Dec 1831, 7 engravings, plus "Discourses Delivered to the Students of the Royal Academy. By Sir Joshua Reynolds." Vol. 3: Jan-June 1832, 7 engravings. Vol. 4: July-Dec 1832, Jan-April 1833, 9 engravings. In November 1832, the title changed to Arnold's Library of Fine Arts, and this change meant a return to start over with that issue marked Vol. 1, Num. 1. Engravings are almost entirely portraits, except for one church view from Stratford, Essex, and one double-page spread in vol. 4 of "Design for a Comic Theatre" & "Remarks on the Building of Theatres" drawn by G. Wightwick and engraved by E. Turrell, with some color added Portraits include John Jackson, James Northcote, B. G. Piranesi, George Henry Harlow, Paul Sandby, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Joshua Reynolds, Geroge Nightwick, John Opie, James Barry, Francis Bartolozzi, William Hogarth, George Morland, Augustus Pugin, and Edward Bird. Makes for fascinating browsing and reading. G+ (Vol. 1 front board is almost entirely separated & this vol. is also missing spine material; pages throughout set are mostly clear, with some foxing to plate pages and/or flyleaves; some marks from previous owners incl. original drawings in margins and on flyleaves.).
