Item Description: Printed in Germany: 1730., 1730. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Six volumes in one, each with its own title page. Overall pagination = pp. (2), 440; (4), 244; (2), 224; (4), 116 + Three complex engraved mystical plates. Old age and damp stain. First title page with the loss of a few letters. Old binding, broken. Autograph manuscript ownership, in German, of "Jakob Friederich Rommel, in Philadelphia, 1832." This is apparently mostly from volume three of the first edition of Bohme's full works 'Samtliche Schriften.' The contents include most of his major works: Libri Apologetici; Anti-Stiefelius; Apologia contra Gregorium Richter; De Signatura Rerum oder Von der Geburt und Bezeichnung aller Wesen; De Electione Gratiae, Von der Gnaden-Wahl; and De Testamentis Christi. Jakob Bohme (1575-1624) was a German Christian mystic and theologian. Born near Gorlitz where he was a Lutheran and worked as a shoemaker. Bohme had mystical experiences throughout his youth, culminating in a vision in 1600 that he received through observing the exquisite beauty of a beam of sunlight reflected in a pewter dish. He believed this vision revealed to him the spiritual structure of the world, as well as the relationship between God and man, and good and evil. After further visions during the next 20 years, he began to publish his mystical cosmological observations. He influenced many anti-authoritarian and mystical movements, such as: the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers); Philadelphians; Gichtelians; the Society of the Woman in the Wilderness; the Ephrata Cloister; Harmony Society; Zoar; Martinism; and Christian Theosophy. Bohme was also an important source of German Romantic philosophy, influencing Schelling in particular. He was also an important influence on the ideas of the English Romantic poet, artist and mystic William Blake. Very scarce. GER-GER1. Bookseller Inventory # 012A46

Item Description: Ex typographia Adami Sartorii, Ingolstadii, 1599. 1st edition (Adams G-1239; VD16 G-3221). [20], 541, [3] p. Errata, p. 542. Final 2 pages blank. Printer's device to t.p. Head- tailpieces. 8vo: *^8 2*^2 A - 2L^8. 6-1/4" x 4" [15.8 cm x 10.4 cm]. This Gretser's important Apologia on Life of Ignatius Loyola, one of the most fascinating hagiographies ever written on the Jesuit order founder, describing how he [Loyola] would drive away Satan, who appeared in "a shining and glistening form" with his staff, like a "troublesome cur." It also describes Loyola's great humility, living amongst the poor. Gretser's Apologia is a massive defence of the great saint, filled with reference to other great saints, including early Orthodox fathers such as Gregory of Nazianzenus, Latin fathers like St. Augustine and Jerome, as well as English Catholic martyrs killed during Henry VIII's Reformation. Gretser himself, then as now, was/is regarded as one of the most prominent Jesuit theologians. "He was recognized as one of the best controversialists of his time, and was highly esteemed by Pope Clement VIII, Emperor Ferdinand II, and Maximilian I of Bavaria. Some of the greatest of his age, such as Cardinal Bellarmine and Marcus Welser, corresponded with him and consulted him in their difficulties." [Wiki]. A somewhat uncommon Jesuit work, with ABPC showing no copies having come to auction these last 30+ years. Bound with TavBooks ID #33488 [Richeome's SOCIETATIS IESU In GALLIA, 1599], and price is for both titles. General wear & soiling to binding. Unobtrusive stain to lower half of textblock, with old paper reinforcement to lower portion of title leaf. Early signature to t.p., inked out. Tear to *8 [no loss]. Paper/printing defect G4r. Withal, a solid VG copy. Period full vellum binding with 2 [of 4] cloth ties. Red edgestain. Bookseller Inventory # 33487

Pro Divo Carolo, Eivs Nominis quinto Romanorum: Charles V, Holy

Item Description: In aedibvs Ioannis Schoeffer, 1527. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [2], 8, [2], 9-218, [2] pp. (the last page blank). A6, B-Z4, a-c4, d6. Title within woodcut architectural border incorporating device of Johann Schoeffer. (4to) 20x14.5 cm (8x5¾"), modern vellum, marbled endpapers & edges. First Edition. Scarce and important gathering of documents and letters sent and issued by Charles V and Pope Clement VII to and toward one another in the events leading to the Sack of Rome by Charles's troops in the year of this publication. His armies had defeated Francis I at Pavia, ending his war with France for the control of Lombardy. The Pope absolved Francis from his sworn word on the instrument of surrender and organized the League of Cognac to oppose Charles. The letters of Charles V were actually written by A. Valdés, a friend of Erasmus; those of Clemens VII by J. Sadoleto, a liberal humanist educator and scholar. The present work was suppressed by Charles V later in his reign.
